G'day, I recently posted an enquiry about marriage details for the 20TH Regiment, and I was very pleased with the response, and information , I received.
We seem to be running into problems, because we cannot accurately identify the 20TH REGIMENT. Our problem.. trying not to be long-winded... is that we don't know of WHAT? 20th Regiment of FOOT ? or HUSSARS ? Is just "20th Regiment " identification enough? We have their location in 1872, and that was Buttervant, Cork. Pinning this down is very difficult, .......any advice?? Thanks Brian.

Hi Brian.
I hope you find some helpful information in the ideas I list here.
http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/depot/1856.htm -
The 20th Depot Battalion was stationed in Cork about 1872.
http://www.irishsoldiers.com/ - Military Heritage Trust of Ireland.
This looks as though it might be a useful site for you.
An old newspaper of the time might provide the information that you require
The Cork Examiner was first issued in 1841.

Hello again, Cristopher. I have just rec'd your info, and I am about to follow up on that. "Regiments" sounds like a good lead. Thanks. Brian.

Fitzmiller, 'In Search of The Forlorn Hope...' places the 20th The Lancs. (E. Devon) Fusiliers in Buttevany 1873-74. (His naming is incorrect; they did not become the Lancs. Fus. until 1881). Other sources place them arriving in Ireland in Dec 1869.
The Land Forces of Britain & the Commonwealth page
http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/lists/bargxrefn.htm
will give you all the numbered regiments
20th (The East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot 1688-1968
20th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons 1760-1763 (Disbanded in Ireland 1818)
20th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons 1779-1783 (Disbanded in Ireland 1818)
20th Hussars 1862-1922 (Not in Ireland during this period. Reached England from Indian service in to Aldershot c.1874)
20th (or Jamaica) Regiment of (Light) Dragoons 1792-1818 (Disbanded in Ireland 1818)
So it looks like your regiment is 20th (the East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot ; (20th (the East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot became The Lancashire Fusiliers in the re-organization of 1881).

G'day, "regiments", Sorry about the delay, Thanks for the information, It's given us something else to think about, ( the times do not exactly line=up). but we are continuing, thanks Brian.

A regiment stationed at Cork could well have had a company at Buttevant (apologies for my earlier typo' Buttevany'). These regiments had a tendency to get moved around a lot. Also Kitzmiller is not always reliably accurate so I wouldn't worry too much about the 1872/73 discrepancy. I think you can have a fair amount of confidence in it being 20th (the East Devonshire) Regiment of Foot.
There's a possibility you may find him indexed at the PRO online try entering his name (first and last) in the Search the Catalogue of PROCAT putting WO (that's letter O and not zero) in the last box. Or if you give me his name I will do it.

Hello again," regiments" ... thanks for all your advice. I would appreciate a look-up, the details we have are........George Stock. birth c. 1843
Thanks again Brian.
-
Hello folks.... I'm back again. In our efforts to trace this bloke , we only seem to be able to access records of the Officers. would there be any other records lurking around? thanks , Brian.
-
I thought I'd replied on the lookup but just noticed I hadn't. Problem is the discharge/pension papers are only indexed up to about 1867 date of discharge so that he was too young to have appeared there.
Your only recourse may be to have someone do the work for you at the PRO if you can't get there yourself.

Thanks, "regiments", that is appreciated.
PRO is a little far to travel , I'm afraid, from Sydney, in OZ. Grateful for your effort, Brian

I notice a search of the 1881 British Census on the LDS site turns up just two George Stock entries with a birth date of 1848. If you spread to two years either side the total number is about 19. Perhaps by a process of elimination you can determine which is yours if any. Once you know the name of his wife, if he was married in Ireland then there is likely to be a record at the GRO in Dublin. In most cases the regiment occurs under 'occupation' in the registration though not always as definitive as one would like; e.g., Pte. 20th Rgt; Sgt. Devon Regt; Soldier; well, you see what I mean.

Hi Brian!
You might try posting on the Armed Forces board on this site - there's people there that maybe able to help you!!

Annie
