Hi Jan,
Yes I am aware the Southland Cemeteries are online ..... and as there are people still living, even if there was a headstone and I wanted one, I could not put the name up.

Hi Alex,
I am hunting my CRIGHTONS out. I see some are buried at Wyndham cemetery. I am not sure if that is close to you or not. One of the headstones reads:
Name CRIGHTON
William Henry CRIGHTON buried 24 Sep 1924.
Aubrey CRIGHTON buried 9 Aug 1928.
Eva CRIGHTON buried 26 Sep 1938.
Emily OUGHTON buried 3 Jan 1955.
William CRIGHTON buried 24 Feb 1962
Am I to assume they are all one family. If possible can you see if there is a death notice for them please. I think there may be other's but I can also PM names if needed.
Cheers

Thanks for all your help on this one. It looks like they are all one family. Some of them being young children which is very sad.

Hi
Is or was Waikiwi separate to Invercargill in the early 1900s or has it always been deemed part of it?
Thanks
-
A warm welcome to you Voice
Looks like Waikiwi is still part of Invercargill

Re Waikiwi:-
Is or was Waikiwi separate to Invercargill in the early 1900s or has it always been deemed part of it?
Have lived almost all of my life here and to my knowledge Waikiwi has always being a suburb of Invercargill right back to the earliest times. Can find nothing anywhere on the net or eleswhere to the contary.
However to be certain an inquiry to the Invercargill City Council would confirm one way or the other. E mail an inquiry to:-

Hi, I'm hoping you may be able to advise me on the following...
I was searching for my great grandfather Timothy Crowley who lived in Invercargill and 'magically' came across a single family group on the LDS 'Familysearch.com' website which included my GGrandfather and also showed my grandfather and his siblings. Timothy was shown as born circa 1956 and yet the NZ bmd lists show 1864 (and no parents which is very annoying!). The LDS site has no source information so I have no idea where they got this information.
The marriage date 1881 of Timothy to Kathleen was correct.
I later found that 1956 was the year of establishment of Invercargill and 1864 the year of formal recording of bmd in NZ, so both dates could be suspect. To top this off, Kathleen was buried as 'Catherine' at Eastern Cemetary but there is no evidence of Timothy. They were Catholic.
There seems to have been a separation and a Timothy appears at Lawrence Cemetary buried next to another wife Hannah (m: 1897 no record on NZbmd).
Questions
Is it possible to find out reliably how many Timothy Crowleys there were in Invercargill and Otago around 1850-1870?
Given that NZbmd had no parents recorded for Timothy , is there another way to find them in Invercargill?
Any info would help.
Thanks
John Crowley

Hi John
Thank you for your inquiry.
I would be pleased to help you if I can .. cannot guarrantee the results !!
What I know is this that the Invercargill Public Library Archives have Electoral Rolls covering the period 1850 - 1870 or there abouts. Will not have time this afternoon but over the next couple of days will visit the library and search those records on microfiche and anything else they may have as well, for "Timothy Crowley".
Have found the listing in the Lawrence Cemetery for Timothy Crowley. There is in fact quite a few Crowley's there .. all relatives?? It would be possible for me to visit there in the next month or so if required particulary if you wanted photographs which are not available online.
There are few Crowley's listed in the Invercargill City and Southland District Cemeteries. Photographs of Gravesites are available online for the Invercargill Cemetery.
Just give me a couple of days and will see what I can turn up locally.
Best regards
Alex Glennie

Hi John and welcome,
It would pay to start a new thread for Timothy Crowley to make it more obvious and allow everyone to help you

Hello Alex...
I think Janette was just suggesting the "many hands make light work" principle.
For instance, I have a reference to a Timothy CROWLEY marrying a Hannah FAHEY in 1897 which lists parents. If the request had it's own thread I'm sure there's others who have similar snippets of info. Saves you re-inventing the wheel :-)

Hi Alex,
No,what I was meaning was,the more who see John thread the better, not everyone will look at it where it is.
Sorry if I offended you,it was not my intention ;D

Hi Beg and again Janette
It is been proven and stated on here any number of times there is not enough people in Otago/Southland/Invercargill willing to donate their time for Roots.Chat inquiries, lookups etc. I personally cannot be bothered nor do I have the time to be chasing someone else's tail and following up on the same work.
Check on the RAOK website they will tell you the same thing.
I will stand aside for experience and minds greater then my own to take over.
Cheers

Hi Alex G,
I am sorry to read your recent post, as I have received wonderful assistance from everyone at RChat. I'm not sure why you write that you will stand aside for experience and minds greater than your own to take over, for surely it is only through active participation in contributing to RChat threads that any RChatter develops their experiences and their minds.
I am quite certain that neither Beg nor Janette sought to cause any offence to you or to anyone, and I have read and re-read this thread.
May I ask you to join in as part of a team effort towards a thread that I have started today here on the NZ board, I am quite sure your experience and knowledge of The South would be of value to our efforts!
Edit to Add here's the link to the team topic thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,521668.0.html

Couldn't agree more Janette. If the surname was in a title of its own, it is easier to see, there are heaps of people out there in cyberspace who just by chance google a name, and up pops the thread.
Cheers
