Hi. I sent off to the GRO for this marriage cert, but I can't figure out the parish or the home address of the bride and groom. Anyone have any ideas? The marriage took place in Enniscorthy, Wexford.
Thanks,
Clarissabell

Hi,
Can you give the surnames involved. It might be possible to cross-reference these names in something like Griffiths Valuation, which would give you a starting point.
One of the addresses looks like Money........ but a little more information might make it easier to decipher.
Cheers

It looks like the surnames are McGrath & Freeman
Registration district of Enniscorthy, registrars district of Clonroche

Thanks. The names are John Freeman and Margaret McGrath 1894. On the 1901 census, it says they were both born in Wexford, but John Freeman says he is from Co. Wexford. All their children seem to have been born in the same area, as the birth indexes all says Enniscorthy. As you can see, John's father was Jeremiah Freeman, and Margaret's father was George McGrath.

can you read the name of the Parish Priest on the cert ?
I can sometimes work out which parish by checking the RC directory in Thoms..

Hi Shane. It's Nicholas Lambert. The handwriting is really difficult to read and I think the quality of the photocopy isn't helping!
Fingers crossed!

Moneytucker and Courtnacuddy seems to be quite close to Davidstown.. about 5km
Would the RC parish for that area be Davidstown ?

save you the trouble of searching on a map...I already had a look at google : Enniscorthy to Davidstown to Moneytucker to Courtnacuddy (http://maps.google.ie/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Enniscorthy&daddr=Davidstown+to:Moneytucker+to:Courtnacuddy,+County+Wexford&geocode=FcMaIQMdzsub_yk_Xwm1gABoSDEwkTGXqccACg%3BFUW5IAMdub6a_ymjOotniKpCSDEx37oZqMcAJg%3BFaCRIAMdAgKa_ylta1bNqKtCSDFxkiq7p8cAJg%3BFZXPIAMd7dyZ_ymbXA8sEKtCSDEhkS27p8cAJg&hl=en&mra=pd&mrcr=2&sll=52.480587,-6.614724&sspn=0.110401,0.300064&ie=UTF8&z=13)

The only townland in the parish of Davidstown that may fit in is Knockmore
-
Culbaire - genius! Shane, thanks for the map! Knockmore is so close to Moneytucker. That is certainly the area where they hailed from. :)

Hi. I think I may have found Margaret McGrath's birth record index in the IGI and it names her birthplace as Carrigbyrne. Google gives a number of different places in Wexford for Carrigbyrne... I wonder does anyone know exactly where it is?
Thanks, Clarissabell
-
There's a place named Carrigbyrne on the road between between Wexford Town and New Ross (N25) - see : google map link (http://maps.google.ie/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Carrickbyrne,+County+Wexford&sll=53.401034,-8.307638&sspn=5.163501,16.589355&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Carrickbyrne,+County+Wexford&ll=52.367634,-6.784401&spn=0.041297,0.129604&z=13)

I'm really puzzled about his family... there are IGI records for a John Freeman, the right age according to the Irish census, born in Clonroche, Wexford... but the father is Darby Freeman, mother Mary Darcy... but for Mary Freeman (John's sister perhaps), I have found two records... one says her father is Jeremiah, the other says it is Darby Freeman! They have the exact same birh date: 03 Jan 1873.
Anyone got a clue what might be going on here?? Jeremiah and Darby seem quite unusual names for farm labourers ???

Hi clarissabell,
Carrigbyrne is indeed on the N25 Wexford /New Ross road. It is in the parish of Newbawn church. As regards your ancestors named Darby & Jeremiah. Darby was in fact a common christian name about 150 years ago. It could also have been used as a nick name too. Therefore your ancestor may have been christined Jeremiah, but was probably known as Darby .
-
Thanks Summerhill! I think Darby was Jeremiah... too many co-incidences. But I know I should have real proof before adding a name to the family tree. :) Great to know where Carrigbyrne is too. Now that the whole of Ireland has been added to Google Maps 'Street View' - I'll be able to take a stroll in Carrigbyrne later this evening.
Thanks! Clarissabell :)
-
Don't be thrown by Carrigbyrne. It was a Registration (sub) District, so lots of people have it on their civil registration. It doesn't mean they were born there.

THANKS FOR THAT HATSLIP :)

"Irish Names for Children" Patrick Woulfe (1923)
Diarmaid/Dermot (Jeremiah, Jerome, Darby ..etc)
"generally angicised Jeremiah"
and in the 1920s, when this book was published, there was encouragement to christen children with more Gaelic names.
So some little Dermots were called after their grandads Jeremiah/Darby.

Hi
If you look at the 1901 Census there are Freeman's living in Templescoby The Leap this is more or less the area you need it is all Courtnacuddy.
There is a John Freeman age 34
His wife Margaret age 30 and 3 children Jeremiah age 6, George age 4 and John who was a baby
There are a few Freeman families in this area
If you look at Carrickbyrne there are McGraths
Hope this helps
