Title: Croydon 1920 - 1950 directory lookup
Post by: Leanne68 on Sunday 03 October 10 19:45 BST (UK)
Hi folks,

I am hoping someone can help me with a lookup in a Croydon directory for :
Frederick LEACH, a tailor in Tamworth Road, Croydon.
I have found him, with his family in the 1911 census, as well as the 1910 Kelly's directory.  I am trying to trace where he might have died and therefore whether his is still in Croydon, as a tailor, after 1910.

Thank you in advance.
regards
Leanne

Hi,

I found this death registration on FreeBMD:

Frederick Leach     MarQ  1920     Croydon   2a   333                   age shown as 64

Could that be your Frederick?

Hi Nanny Jan,

I did see that death on FreeBDM - thank you.
I was hoping that listings for LEACH, tailors in Croydon in later directories might confirm that he was no longer alive and that his sons might have carried on the business.
The 1910 directory lists him as Frederick LEACH & Son, Tailors.

Thank you again for taking the time to help out,
kind regards
Leanne

Hi Leanne.

I think that you touched on an important point in your last posting, which is because the principal of a business dies, the name of the business may continue.

A change of business name does not neccessarily indicate that the owner has died, with the opposite being equally a possibility. But it may be a good guide.

Dave.

Hi Leanne

My father George Leach lived with his father a tailor, also named George  in Tamworth Road around 1926-1930. My father remembers an uncle named Fred who was married to Edie. There were other uncles but cannot remember any names.

Oh my word Georgina!
How nice to get a message from a possible family connection.

Would your dad happen to remember an uncle Reginald/Raginald who moved to South Africa?
He would have been 2 years younger than your granddad George (who, if my info from findmypast.co.uk is correct was born around 1906?)

best wishes
Leanne

Hi Leanne

I will ask dad, however his memories of his chilhood are a little vague, as he was put into care along with a brother Roy and sister Pauline at a young age.  I never met my grandfather, aunt or uncle eventhough they never lived that far away.   I may not be of much help however I would like to know how much information you gather. What is you connection?

Hi again Georgina,

My aunt's father is Reginald Robert LEACH.  He died some time ago and we're trying to trace any other family.
Do you happen to know whether any of your seconds cousins (Baldi, Collins or Leach family) are still around?
They would have also have been Reg's nieces and nephews and my aunt's cousins.

Looking at the information I've collected it seems that only your grandfather and Reg had sons to carry down the Leach name.  It looks like the other brothers had daughters.

best wishes from a chilly Holland!
Leanne

Going back to the original question, yes, there is a trades entry in 1928 for Leach, F & Sons, Tailors, 71 Tamworth Road

There are residents entries for a Frederick Leach living at 13 Westbury Road, and a R Leach living at 17 Colworth Road (no Frank or George though)

Hope this is of some help
