My sister-in-law's family, the Gilby's, were Quakers who lived at Swavensey, Cambs in the mid-1800's, before that in Molesworth, Hunts (back to early 1700's). However many of the key events in the earlier period come up as Wellingborough, Northants, where the Quarterly Meetings of the Friends Society took place (Raunds).
Does anyone have access to records or research experience that would help establish whether the Gilby family ever lived in Raunds / Wellingborough, or whether this is merely the place of registration of births and burials?

Hi Frazshep.
I have records for the Non-conformists chapel at Raunds I do not
know of a Cemetery. :-\
It is not a quaker one though, it is Methodist.
I am linking the other thread so we know what has been noted also.

Hi again.
Graham has a list of Chapels in Northants here.
http://edintone.com/dirchap.html
And the Northants Record Office have the following records.
SOCIETY OF FRIENDS
Quarterly Meeting and BUGBROOKE and NORTHAMPTON Monthly Meeting
C or B, 1647-1836, M, 1659-1834, B, 1657-1837
WELLINGBOROUGH Monthly Meeting
C or B, 1653-1824, M, 1734-1773 B, 1662-1776
Hopefully the later ones may help you.

I have just checked my pictures of Wellingborough Quaker graves.
No Gilby's I am afraid. :(

Hi Sandy,
Thank you for all of the above which I will sift through. Interesting - the records say "burial place - Raunds" so either the graves are too old (which is quite likely) or that was where the record was deposited ie Quarterly meeting of Society of Friends.
I've checked the volume numbers of the nonconformist records and they are definitely Quaker registers, not Methodist (which is what I suspected first of all).
Anyway, many thanks for your guidance - I'll ponder where to go next...
Cheers,
Frazer

Hi Sandy,
Yes, clocked that. They are a family living a mile up the road from our lot, also Quakers and with a run of Thomas's and Williams in their line - but I cannot find a bit of paper to connect them. As we all know you can come a cropper if you just make assumptions!

Well maybe you could list what folk you already know
that are buried in Raunds. :)

Good idea - will do. :)

Hello from Raunds. There was a Quaker Meeting House in Thorpe Street, Raunds, although the cottage where meetings were held was sold in1873. Meetings ceased there in 1834 and it was demolished in1880.
It did have a small burial ground which still exists, although I don't know how to access it. I don't think there are any MIs though. I know I shan't be able to do anything this week, but I will try the Council offices to see if I can find out anything in there.
I have looked in my book of Raunds MIs (C of E and Wesleyan) and there are no Gilbys mentioned.
Regarding the second of Seahall's links to the NRO document, may I draw your attention to page 7 item155, which I think may answer your question, so you might be able to find out by contacting the NRO.

HI.
I thought I would say that I went to the Council Office myself on
Monday asking about the Quaker House.
They thought it was in Brook St, as I was told also, I wished I had
known it was Thorpe St at the time, but there you go.
They had no information except when it was built.
They did give me a name of someone in the Raunds History Society
though.
As you live in the village rancegirl (whoops town, I can not image it as such)
you would obviously know more than myself.

Thank you all for your amazing interest - I will post more over the weekend in terms of specific burials. Just returned from trip away so sorry I have been quiet!
Really appreciate the help - Frazer

Sandy asked for the burials I already have and they are:
Thomas Gilby buried 15 Jan 1809 listed as Raunds
Hannah Gilby (wife) buried 9 Aug 1875 Raunds
William Gilby (their son) buried 26 April 1835 Raunds
William Gilby (his son, died 1 month) 9 Aug 1796 Raunds
All lived in Molesworth, Huntingdonshire.
Also from the non-conformist records (Quaker) are the burials of other Gilby's from the neighbouring village of Bythorn, and I need to take a view if they are related or not:
William Gilby buried 13 Feb 1778 Raunds
Rebecca Gilby (his wife) buried 10 Dec 1781 Raunds
The birth of their son Josiah is listed as Raunds 1738, the marriage of their daughter Olive takes place in Raunds 1751, and their daughter Rebecca is buried at Raunds Jul 16 1813
All these are found in Quaker records. I think they must be related but it is difficult to work out how!

Well I went to the Council Offices but although they now know where the Quaker meeting house was (thanks to Sandy) they did not know how to access the burial ground. I shall try elsewhere.
-
Thank you for trying - I am wondering whether this was where the death was registered and that the burial ground was elsewhere -possibly even the local church? I don't know enough about how these records were kept to know.
