Hi all,
Need help!
I am trying to back-ground information on Edward Hockworth born in Bradford in 1844.
No records of him appear until the 1881 census, in which he is married to Ann Heaton (b 1851) and living in Leeds. This census records shows him as been born in Bradford. However there is no trace of him in the 1851, 1861 or 1871 census!!!
Edward and Ann had 5 children:
Elizabeth (1870)
Rebecca (1872)
Sarah (1875)
Edward (1882) - My G Grandfather
Ada (1887)
Any info would be very helpful.
Thanks
Rob

Hi,
He is being rather hard to find, I see they had a brother in law Joseph Heaton living with them in 1881 so i take it he married Ann Heaton.
The only marriage I can find is on www.yorkshirebmd.org for an Ann Heaton and Edward Hopworth in 1869, Hunslet, Leeds.
They are not on same page on freebmd as there is a difference of reference numbers but on the actual images both references seem to be 9b 361 AMJ 1869, Hunslet. THe surname is Hopworth.
Do you think this may be them, or if you already have the marriage certificate , what details does it give?
Saying all that I can t find an Edward Hopworth on earlier censuses or a birth ???.
Best wishes
Cathy

I agree, he is very elusive 8) :)
Is he the Edward HOCKSWORTH age 71, death registered in Leeds 1910?
MARRIAGE on FreeBMD: Jun Qtr 1869, Hunslet 9b, page 364 (the page nr is very clear)
Ann HEATON (there is another bride on same ref nr, page 364 but no grooms are indexed there)
Edward HOPWORTH Jun Qtr 1869, Hunslet has been indexed by FreeBmd as page 361, but looking at the blown up image of the page, I believe it should be 364 - part of the 4 is very faint and looks nearly like a 1 (other 4's on the same page are the same). The page he is indexed as being on (361) has 4 grooms and 2 brides showing. I would hazard a guess that he and one of the other grooms both belong on page 364. Which would leave page 361 with 4 names and show 364 as having 4 names.
The children? Birth Registrations on FreeBMD:
Elizabeth Ann OCKWORTH - 1870 Hunslet
Rebecca HOCKWORTH - 1872 Leeds
Sarah Jane HOCKWORTH 1875 Leeds
? Edward HOPWORTH 1879 Leeds
Ada HOCKWORTH 1886 Leeds
You mentioned your direct line was son Edward (1882).
He was already on the 1881 Census, age 2. And age 12 in 1891.

Hi
FreeBMD has an Edward HEPWORTH in the March quarter of 1843, Bradford vol XXlll p 148. There doesn't look to be anything close to the name in 1848, which is when Edward thinks he was born according to the 1871 and 1881 censuses!

Lesley

Hi ,
I think Ambly is probably right and the reference should be 9b 364, hope this might be them, else i ve started everyone on a bit of a Hopworth goosechase!
With so many Hop/Hepworths it then becomes very confusing , more so with Bradford and Leeds fairly close together .
I did find an Edward Hep(looks like Hop) worth b 1848 on the 1861 with father Samuel J Rg09/3344 66/12
down as born in Rawdon which is between Bradford and Leeds.
I think there are too many variants to pin him down easily but good luck Rob !

Hi all,
Thanks for your help so far.
As you say Edward Hockworth is very elusive ???
Ann Heatons parents appear to originate from Sandby (Bedfordshire) and Ann appears on the 1861 census as living in Leeds with her parents.

Hi All.
After further digging it appears thats the Hockworth's do indeed appear on the 1871 census as OCKWORTH. It has Edward's wife Ann Heaton as been born in Sandy, which is correct. Also their first child Elizabeth was born in 1870, and this date also matches.
Thanks
Rob

;D ;D yep - see my Reply#1
Interesting that OCKWORTH was also the way Elizabeth Ann's birth was registered in 1870, and HOPWORTH is also the way son Edward was (probably) registered in 1879 - the same name as father Edward may have married under.
Might also be interesting if the 1869 Marriage proves to be them. I'm wondering if Edward was under a different name 1851 / 1861 - perhaps a stepfather's name if his mother married/married again after he was born...
Cheers
