Hello, new here and hoping someone might be able to help. :) I'm having a hard time finding more info on one family line.
I'm trying to find out more about my gg grandparents Frederic (Fred) Robichaud and Elizabeth Gallant(Gallian). Not having to much luck on this side. Their children were born in Chatham, New Brunswick.
Names are Joseph Alexander b1895, Patrick b.1892, Josephine b.1897, Alma (Emma my g grandma) b. 1898, and I also think these children John b.1887, Albert b. 1888, William b. 1890, James b. 1891, Daniel b. 1894, May b. 1895.
I think but not positive that Elizabeth died in 1899 and Fred remarried Catherine Mahew (Mailloux), 14 Aug 1899. Who also went by Kate and Katherine. Then they had children Frederick b. 1902, Bernard b. 1904, Mary Anges b. 1906, Katherine Rose b. 1908, Mary Susan b. 1911, Annabella b. 1914. That was a suspicion of someone else I talked to, but I haven't been able to confirm it. I did find the marriage reg for Fred and Catherine. But it did not say if he was single or widowed.
I haven't been able to find any records for Fred and Elizabeth other then their children birth records in the NB archive website. I haven't had any luck finding a marriage reg for Fred and Elizabeth yet.
Their daughter Alma (Emma) married Oscar Anderson from Sweden in 1914. Oscar died in 1921 not long after returning from WW1. Alma remarried Roy Robinson a few years later. I have found the birth reg and also the marriage registrations for Alma Emma online. Just including the info in case it's helpful.
My main snag has been in not being able to find a marriage reg for Fred and Elisabeth. I'm guessing it would be around 1885 biased on the age of the eldest child. I'm hoping that if I can find it, it will list their parents names.
If anyone has any info on the family, especially Fred and Elizabeth would be very much appreciated! This side of the family has been really hard to track down.
Thanks,
-
Hello there and a warm welcome to Rootschat :).
You can search for your family in the 1901 and 1911 Censuses for free at this link. Click on 'split view' at the top of the index page to see the original image which gives additional info.

Hi Polarbear, thanks for the welcome. :)
I have searched the census many times. I can't find any info about Elizabeth past 1898 when her last child was born. But in the 1911 census there is a Fred and Kate who were married in 1899. Some of the children listed look like the right names/ages that they could be the children of Fred and Elizabeth. But there's no hints as to Fred's parents are or Elizabeth's. ???
What I've found in the census data so far is. I'm not 100% that these are the same family. But it is possible. I don't think that they left New Brunswick, since there daughter Alma married there in 1914 and she was only 16.

Ok one more census that's relevant.
http://automatedgenealogy.com/uidlinks/Links.jsp?uid=150467151
That one shows the comparison between the 1901 and 1911 with Fred and Kate. Since their marriage reg in the NB archives and on ancestry shows they were married in 1899. I'm pretty sure it is Fred's second marriage. Many of the children listed are to old to have been from their marriage.
-
Hi,
Have you tried the New Brunswick archives?
http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/Govrecs/VISSE/default.aspx?culture=en-CA
Good hunting.
-
The 1911 seems to be from the Frederick/ Catherine Mahen/Mahe/Menn/Maheu union which does seem a second marriage, but is this the same family as you've indicated on the other censuses....?
Joseph Alexander Robicheau May 20 1895, Josephine Robichaud was born March 2 1897, Alma Oct 25 1898
As they appear to be Catholic, maybe you might get lucky and find more births to prove the children are all of the same father before moving on...
If you think that is the right family in 1911 which did you think was Alma?
adding 1901 info
Robicheau Fred 1847 age 53 / Kate 1876 age 25
Albert 1887 age13
John 1888 age 12
Minnie 1889 age 11
William 1890 age 10
James 1891 age 9
Xavier 1892 age 8
Josephine 1896 age 4
Danl 1897 age 3
Amos 1898 age 2
Joseph 1900 age 6/12

Hi, Sorry for not getting back to you all sooner. I've been busy getting ready for our Thanksgiving weekend. :)
Alma was my great grandmother and she also went by Emma. I believe that in the 1901 census her name is miss written as Almos. Then in the 1911 I think she is the Emley (Emma).
I did write to the New Brunswick Archives a few weeks ago. I heard back the other day. The death registry for Elizabeth Gallant in 1899 does not list a spouse or parents. But they said apparently common before 1920?
The marriage certificate for Fred Robichaud and Catherine (Kate) Maheu did list Fred's parents and his birth place.
His birth place is Pokemouche. His parents are listed as Luc Robichaud and Archauge Arcenault. The person who looked it up for me said the mothers name was hard to read, but that was his best interpretation.
Biased on that I went digging and I believe that Luc and Archauge are this couple.
1861 Census of Canada
Luke Robitheau36
Arkangel Robitheau30
Mary Robitheau10
Ferdinand Robitheau8
Peter Robitheau5
Philias Robitheau4
Maurice Robitheau4
Nazan Robitheau1
Anthony Robitheau0
I could be wrong, but I believe that Ferdinand is my Fred. I've found many Ferdinand's going by the name Fred...
A marriage listing for Luc and Archauge
http://www.robichaud.info/marr/tracadie.htm
I wrote back to the archives to see if they have a marriage reg for Fred and Elizabeth about 1885/86. I've searched there online site and haven't been able to find one. If it lists the same parents for Fred, that would confirm my hunch.
Oh and yes, both the NB archives and the Family search site have the birth records for the children.
I remember a story from when I was little. It was about my great grandmother being adopted. But I know that's not true as I have her birth and marriage reg. I think it's a twisted story biased on her being raised by her step mother. Alma was born late in 1898 and her mother died spring of 1899, Fred remarried 4 months latter. I'm thinking that's how the story was changed a few generations latter...

The family list on this page seems to have the same thought with same & more children listed
http://www.robichaud.info/data/D0000/G0000151.html#I132 Too bad the Gloucester 1852 census doesn't exist anymore to look for Archange / Angelic
This site has different names for the children
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/e/l/James-A-Pellegrin/GENE1-0060.html
I can see children/marriage etc for Nazare ( Nazan) but don't see him or the family in 1881...?
Different spellings of the name I have found just in a few searches Robichau, Robichaud, Robichaux, Robicheau, Robichaud, Robicheaud, Robichaux
Robicheaux, Robitheau, ...then all the Robe variations of the previous spellings
also Robexcheau, Robcheau, Robecgeau
added: aha I found them!!! ( I thought Naz would be an easier find but he was transcribed Nagane) uh, duh, why didn't I look for Ferdinand?
http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e326/e008135695.jpg
and this transcription mother as Aresse
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1881CN_942094
Noted that: two houses previous
Morgan Arceneau female widow age 72 b. New Brunswick / Farmer / Catholic
Gilbert widower age 50 Farmer
Margret age 28 Augustine age 10
Note that in next household is Elizabeth Arceneau, a widow age 54, so perhaps a sister in law??
a Joseph Arceneau Servant , Peter DAUGIE and a Mary Robecheau in household!!
Then a few homes over Oliver Arceneau age 40 wife Polin & big family...in case a brother
-
I thought Ialso found them in 1891... & it seemed your Ferdinand as well transcribed as Fermond....?
But check out the household? "Angle" in household appears to be the mother? But children are too old for it to be the right one...

Other family members seemed to be on page
-
Hmm I don't know. I found her living with her other son Nazaire and his wife Charlotte in the 1891 census here. Listed as Arcange age 60 and widow.
-
Yes he married Charlotte, so that would be the right one ;)...so this time I should have looked for Nazarre ;D figures!!! J.J.
here is a link to the image... http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/001081-119.02-e.php?person_id_nbr=317617
-
LOL ;) Well I love this. It's like a huge puzzle coming together a little at a time. ;D
-
In case they are yours... this seems to be that same neighbouring family in 1861?? So it might be Maryan Not Morgan?
Census Place: Inkerman French District, Gloucester, N.B.

There are only 42 listed in Inkerman, with only 2 other families besides this one...so hopefully Arkangels family is from there! http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails&c=fs%3A1325208
...looking back onto that same Robichaud page link I gave you, the mother's name may have been Robichaud...?
-
Thank you!
Not 100% sure yet, but I might have found Angel. There is an Angel Arseneau in the 1861 census about the right age and in Inkerman.
https://beta.familysearch.org/s/recordDetails/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fpilot.familysearch.org%2Frecords%2Ftrk%3A%2Ffsrs%2Frr_49815558%2Fp_97834458&hash=MPAfKvgWGXfZ5STyuqUCQxOVNk8%253D
I didn't see a family view option... ??? So had a friend look it up on another site for me. The parents are listed as
Joseph Arseneau
https://beta.familysearch.org/s/recordDetails/show?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fpilot.familysearch.org%2Frecords%2Ftrk%3A%2Ffsrs%2Frr_49815554%2Fp_97834454&hash=MPAfKvgWGXfZ5STyuqUCQxOVNk8%253D

The other children listed are:
Joel age 30, Dosity age 26, Angel age 23, Oliver age 21, Mary age 18, Eugene age 15, Harriet age 13, Julia age 12, Addelaide age 7, Mary age 5, Stephen age 2.
-
I thought you said you had found her with a family in 1861?
Pointing out that there is a shrink link available at the bottom of this page...just paste your links and they'll shorten into small coded links...looks like this...try it...works great! [Shrink Link]
-
Ack your right lol she is with her husband in the 1861 census. LOL I shouldn't be reading old records when I'm half asleep. :P
-
Not to worry we all do it... names and dates all start running together, and we need to go back to the top and look again...You need to start a basic little tree in front of you just to get started, so you can see what still needs to be proven...One can't rely on trees we find on the internet...If sources aren't listed sometimes they may just be stepping stones of scattered info to help get to the truth...
And yes, the only way to build a family from the FHS site is to look into each household and view page numbers and then line and list them as I did. It is easy with just a few families, but unless I knew the other family members forenames wouldn't attempt it for any more than that...
Besides, as I said there seem to be only 3 families of Arseneau in Inkerman 1861, so all or none may be yours... ;D
MaryAn may have only been related as a Robichaud, if that is a correct marriage...
all the best, J.J.
-
Yes I understand about the internet trees. I found a few that mixed me up for a bit with another line. lol
With Luc and Arkangels, I only have firmer info so far. The names as parents on Fred's marriage license, and the census info.
I keep hoping to find their marriage reg online. So far I haven't found it in the New Brunswick archives site. I'll have to write them and see if they have it in an offline holding. I'm hoping it will list her parents names.
Great idea for a mini tree!
-
Here is a for-instance...This site has linked the couple to Angeline as well ( scroll just under halfway down page)
(has Etienne Arseneau & Ann Robichaud - marriage: 1830-11-02, Inkerman, GL, NB )
http://www.robichaud.info/data/D0000/G0000002.html
However, there is no information linked to her, so they have not proven it...Also they have only listed a few children however the couple seemed to have had several ( Gilbert is listed later on page)...so you have much to prove before moving on...Ancestors are also named on the site...so I am sure the same surnames will unite several more times. :P ;)
And by the way, in the Roman Catholic parish files, many women were given the name Marie as a first name...v
-
Ahhh, I might have found Archange Arseneau birth reg. its on ancestry though. It says 3 November 1828 and parents Joseph Arseueau and if I'm reading it right mother is Marie Duglais.
Also found a death reg on the NB archives.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a1b/ (http://www.rootschat.com/links/0a1b/)
-
STOP Looking! :D and make that tree... ;) ;D J.J.
This entry has dates for the marriage Luc/Arkange and lists children, but no other information on her so perhaps the marriage had no parents listed for her? http://www.robichaud.info/data/D0037/G0000007.html#I156
You can try writing the site owner to see how they found the marriage date, etc?
Arkange isn't listed with the usual children in 1901, but I also didn't find daughter Marie/Mary Ann...also I'd make sure you can't find her anywhere before ordering that death under her surname...( You can ask the same person in site above if they sent for it, as they list the same year you found...
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=2190&highlight=50

I did make one this morning. ;D ;)
I did find the marriage info from that website. But on another page for only marriage listings. I posted the link in the message with the census info for Luke and Arkange.
http://www.robichaud.info/marr/tracadie.htm
The owner of the site died 10 years ago. The site was taken over by I believe his brother, but the contact email address bounces. :(
I did find posts made by the sister of the original site owner on another forum. She mentioned that she was keeping up the database. I emailed her a few days ago about the family. I'm hoping that she might have some further info.
I also wrote to the NB archives this morning, to see if they do have a copy of this marriage reg, since it's not listed on their online database.
-
Oh I did find the marriage reg for the daughter Marie Robichaud. She married Frank Doiron, 10 Jan 1898. The reg lists her parents as Luc Robichaud and Archauge Arsenaux.
I haven't found them in the 1901 census yet to confirm if Archauge was living with them.
I'm still trying to figure out the rest of the marriage reg. Some of it's hard to read.
