Title: Census look-up Notting Hill please.
Post by: Dino25 on Saturday 29 May 04 21:04 BST (UK)
Hello

I have hit upon a major problem with my family tree. I have established my gt-grandparents were George Edward Simmons (b.1870 Notting Hill) and Helena Rebecca Ward (b.1877 Notting Hill). I have found this info from the 1901 census and my grandmothers birth certificate. She was born in December 1899 St Saviour Southwark and they were living at 50 Boyson Road Walworth which is shown as Newington on 1901 census.
However, I can't find anyone from Notting Hill on the 1881 census which match this criteria.
Can anyone look up other census' for me?
Can someone with more local knowledge let me know what Notting Hill might be alternatively described as? Would it be Kensington?
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Dina

This is the only George E Simmons of the right age on the 1891 census
There are no George Edward Simmons listed , but there are over 400 plain Georges Simmons.

Simmons, Fanny M E 46 Devonport, Devon Wife  Battersea  London
Simmons, Fanny M G 21 St marys;newington Daughter  Battersea  London
Simmons, George 46 Newington;st marys Head  Battersea  London
Simmons, George E 20 St georges;southwark Son  Battersea  London
Simmons, John D 12 Devonport, Devon Son  Battersea  London
Simmons, William C 11 Devonport, Devon Son  Battersea  London

I'll see if I can find Helena who should be about 14.

Thanks for looking these up Chris

These certainly look the right age but I'm beginning to wonder if the Notting Hill location is going to bug me for a long time.

One of those dead-ends I suppose but thanks all the same.

Hello.
Yes I would certainly say you could class Notting Hill as being in the Kensington area.
My G.Grandparents, G.Parents and Parents came from the area that is now Notting Hill and where they lived is on the 1881/91 and 1901 census as being in the Kensington District.
I did find this family on the LDS 1881
9. Heathfield Cottages Middlesex
Geo Simmons  Head    45   Bn Higate Middlesex Labourer
Alice     "          Wife     41   Bn Romford Essex
William "           Son      20  Bn  Kensington         Bricklayer
James   "           Son     16   Bn  Kensington        Labourer
Benjamin "         Son     14   Bn  Kensington       workman
GEORGE   "         Son     11   Bn  Kensington       Scholar
Alice         "         Dau       8  Bn   Kensington      Scholar
Mary A     "          Dau       4  Bn    Kensington      Scholar
Anne       "           Dau       2  Bn   Kensington

Hope this helps

Kes

Thanks very much for your message.

I found this since adding my post but was still uncertain as to whether it was the right family. I think I can safely say it is but was just waiting for that something else which collaborates it. Knowing that Kensington definitely covers Notting Hill is very helpful. Thanks

If you come across any other info I would be very pleased to hear from you

Best regards

Dino

Hello Dino.
I was curious to find out where Heathfield Cottages were and by going back to the family we found and keep going to 'previous households' I eventually found a Pottery Lane and a Walmer Road. I then looked on the Gen Docs Victorian Streets and they are both listed as having been in Notting Hill W.11 so I think it is safe to say they were still in Notting Hill.

I believe this listing for Simmons on Walmer Road is linked to my family.  I have Lydia Simmons living on Walmer Road at #2 at the time of my father's birth.  She is my grandmother.  I have little other information unfortunately.  You can look at the following addresses under the 1901 census and you will find her and James Place. Not at all addresses of course but this is where they lived:
# 3 Mersey Street 31 Mar 1901?
#15 Hunt Street
#38 Hunt Street
44 Talbot on the 13th Nov 1905
I can't remember, but one of those addresses had the Simmons family living at it.
