Hello wonderful people,
I'm hoping you can help me. I am helping a young friend with her family history and her grandmother has told her a story about her 3rd gr grandfather being at the Eureka Uprising in Ballarat on the goldfields. Is there any way of varifying this story?
This is what we know of him
George Padget born 1833 or 1835 in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, England
married Martha Turner in Ballarat on 13 August 1855.
Died in Mt Cole 13 August 1900.
On his marriage cert his parents are William and Sarah nee Curnow.
She would also like to know when and how George came to Australia and if he maybe came out with his family, as we cant find him in the 1841 English census, but that does not mean he is not there as he could be mistranscribed or something.
Thank you in advance, cheers Ted

Also for your interest, but not really addressing your query ;D
There is a digitised Will online for GEORGE PADGETT.
He leaves his estate to his sons named...
George, Herbert, Isaac, James Arthur, and Mark Joseph.
With the exception of Herbert who is buried at Werribee, these men are also buried at WARRAK, Mt COLE

Thanks everyone I just popped in and you have found so much.
Logan pm'd me earlier the source and I was astounded as my young friend knows nothing of this except what her grandma wrote to her today. I would live to see the book and maybe buy it for her for Christmas.
Cando - I purchased his death cert on YF's behalf and the parents are unknown. It does however, state that he'd been in Victoria 50 years.
The dates all fit. So my next question is - at 15 would he have come out here alone or with family?
Thanks everyone YF is going to be so happy when she gets here tomorrow.
Luv Ted
Modifed to add: he was 24 when married and she was 17

Excellent. I have Isaac Padgett born 1867 Mount Cole, died 30 September 1937 Braemore Werribee Vic; he married Barbara Gunn.
This looks very promising.

Hi
I'm not actively researching the Padgett family at this time. As said, Isaac Padgett marries into 'my' line of the Gunn family from Ballarat / Buninyong (and before that Caithness). I have a very good record for the consequent 'Gunn Padget't line but did not have the earlier Padgett material, so many thanks as I am in the process of nearly finishing a major family history with another family member.
But yes, the others who are related to the Padgetts - I'm not - may perhaps be interested in knowing the Gunn Padgett line is available if they are interested. They spent most of their time at 'Braemore' Werribee South, for example.
best wishes
Jack

Information from a family descendant of George and Martha Padgett . PADGET ONE NAME STUDY ON FB . As you know as part of my One Name Study I am studying Padget's (and variants of the name) everywhere! I have started in Yorkshire England and as a group we have been looking at Padget's of one particular family in Australia. At the moment I have over 4,500 people in the Padget tree and this consists of 52 separate families (and I have a long way to go ). At some point some of these families will probably merge together.
This is where you come in . I have found a George Padget born in 1833 in Camberidgeshire England to William Padgett (Farmer and a Sarah Curson) who went to Ballaret, Australia and married Martha Turner on 3 October 1855 there. There descendants all seem to have stayed there (As this was where Harold Guy Padget settled). It seems such a coincidence that they have settled in this particular place. So my question is to all the group members that have Padgett's in Ballerat is this a common name in that area and do any of you have these people in your tree? This information may be helpful , your inforamtion will be very helpful to the researcher in the UK
