Trying to trace any info about Raymond Romain, supposedly born in Wellington in 1888 to Francis Leo Romain and Madam Annie McCulloch. The authorities have no record of this birth. Francis may have been a bridge builder or worked in the railways and we think came out from Canada. So far I can't find any records of any of them and am desperate for some help.

Hi Annmr
I have looked on the NZSG disc I have and Archway Archives and there are only 5 Romain entries, none of the names you mention. You might like to try papers past. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast
I did find a couple of trees online (on Anc**try) that state Raymond Sydney Romain was born Wellington 1888 and died Broken Hill NSW. He married Amelia May McBeath. It appears they may had at least 3 children. Do you have this information? There is even a photo of him, if you don't have one.

You'll find your Romain's on here http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/IndexSearch?form=IndexingSearch&cgiurl=%2Fcgi-bin%2FIndex%2FIndexingMarriage.cgi&event=marriages&sname=ROMAIN&gname=&fname=&mname=&frange=1788&trange=1959&place=&x=0&y=0
Gordon Raymond and Willaim Percy are Raymonds and Amelias sons.
Gordon appears to have been a diving Champion.

Thank you for the link to the newspapers. I'll certainly explore that.
I do know about Raymond and Amelia's marriage and their descendants. It's Raymond's birth and his parents that I'm stuck on. I can't find any records for him prior to his marriage.

Hi Annmr
Yes, a hard one. There maybe some luck on papers past, I hadn't found anything under the christian and surnames together but many Romain entries. NZ Historical BMD's did'nt show a birth for Raymond under Romain or Romane. Did Francis definately come from Canada. I ask only because on the tree's I found online, one says USA and the other says Canada. I looked at the Petone Settlers Museum site and didn't find the Romain's on their passenger list.

The closest I can find to a Francis Leo Romain:
There was an arrival into Sydney in 1883 aboard the Ellora, assisted passengers.
Francis Romain, 25 (Francis William Romain)
Emily, 23 (Emily Kate Naish)
William, 3
Ethel, 1 (died aboard ship)
Herbert, infant
They seem to have had another child (Arthur) in 1886, Newton, NSW, but possibly they are the ones who head from Victoria towards London in 1889 - Mr Romain, 31, Mrs, 28, children 8, 5, and an infant - I can see marriages for their children back in the UK.
Who witnessed Francis' marriage in 1912?

Hello - I don;t know if this will add anything to your research or not - I have relatives now known as Romain - they were originally from Reunion and their name was St Romain. Laur Alphonse Auguste Busey de St Romain was born in Mauritius in 1867 and emigrated to New Zealand through Australia and married Caroline Emma CRUNDWELL in Wellington in 1896. They had quite a few children including Vivian, Leon, Ivan, Gordon and Adrian (later known as Abe Romain, a well known jazz and dance band musician in the UK with Jack Hylton's orchestra and later in Sydney where he had a big band at the Trocaderro for many years).
So perhaps you might try using the St Romain as an option.
