Hi. I have a number of ancestors who worked in the coal mines of Derbyshire pre 1910, going as far back as 1850ish. Is there anyway of finding out which mines they worked at ie is there some sort of register? I have searched on the net and cannot find any maps/references to coal mines between these dates, except for a few articles about mining disasters. Family names that I am researching are Wild (or Wilde) and Stocks. Is anybody able to point me in the right direction?

Hi
I know that the Derbyshire Record Office hold records about mining in the county, they have a searchable website (though not actual documents) and the staff are very helpful if you ring them. Just google the record office for details.

Hi,
If these people were miners before 1910 then they should all appear on the 1901 and previous censuses which will give their addresses. Very often there was a 'mining village' very close to the pit where they worked; this should narrow your search down a little.

Hi
Jill's idea is a good one (you may already have done it).
There is a site http://www.oldminer.co.uk/ run by a very keen man - you might find something on there to help. There is a forum and also you could contact the site holder. If you go down to the bottom of the menu bit there is a button for Links and the lower one has some stuff about different mines.
Really it will probably be a matter of guessing which mine people worked at, unless you get very lucky!

Hi
The problem I have had is the number of mines within easy reach of where ancestors lived. I think you're right about being lucky unless you have some indication where to direct the search.
As I said before the record office has records, maps etc associated with mining though I have not found lists of miners waiting for the finding!

Thanks everyone for the info - lots to work on now. I suppose the way to go would be find the maps to narrow down the mines they could possibly have worked at. You are absolutely right nelliedee, I think there are a few possibilities of where they could have worked as they lived in and around Tibshelf.
