Title: Morgan Marriage
Post by: ckearnes on Monday 27 September 10 04:02 BST (UK)
Hi,

I am trying to locate some information in regards to Horace James Morgan who was possibly born in Alabama (I don't know a year but it would be in the early 1900's) and married in Texas (possibly Nacgodoches). I'm unable to locate a birth or marriage for him as I need to locate his parents names (His son THINKS there may be a surname of Douglas for one of the parents).

Horace married Rachel Broyles (nee Barrett). Rachel was married to a Claude Broyles (this info has been given to me by Rachel and Horaces's son).

Horace had 2 children with Rachel and then I believe they separated and Rachel remarried.

I have tried familysearch but haven't been able to locate anything. I'm not very familiar with American records which confuse me.

Thanks

Most birth and marriage records are not available online, but this site gives a pretty good idea of what is available - http://www.germanroots.com/vitalrecords.html

Do you have Horace or Rachel or Claude on any census records?

Hi Charlene,

Will post this info just incase it is of help or an option to investigate for you.

A Joseph Morgan married a Josie Douglas in Birmingham. Jefferson Co. Alabama 13 June 1908

http://www.rootschat.com/links/09vj/

I can't see a Census for a Joseph & Josie but there is one for a Joseph and Jeffie who have a son Horace Morgan born 1921 and living in Pine Hill, Randolph, Alabama on the 1930 Census. He would be of a similar age to Rachel who was born 15 May 1918 Arkansas accordng to the other thread. I will post the Census for you to see:-

1930 Census Pine Hill, Randolph, Alabama

Joseph V Morgan 50 Born Georgia. Married at 29 years. Farmer. General Farm.
Jeffie L Morgan 46 Born Alabama. Married at 19 years
George H Morgan 17 Born Alabama
Una M Morgan 13 Born Alabama
Horace Morgan 9 Born Alabama
Gibbs Morgan 5 Born Alabama

Regards
Sandra

AMENDED:- One family to discount for Horace - Jeffie was Jeffie Gibb - daughter of Thomas E Gibb and Nancy Cosper.

Is Horace Morgan "African American"?

The Morgan's in the 1930 Census Pine Hill, Randolph, Alabama are white but the Joseph and Josie who married in Birmingham, Alabama are black.

Hi,

Thanks for that. I'm not too sure in regards to the Douglas clue, it may be wrong. It doesn't give me much to go on not having a confirmed clue but such is life. Unfortunately I'm not able to get a marriage certificate for them. Their eldest son was born in Garrison, TX so my guess is they married in that area.

Horace Morgan was White.

I don't have a census for Horace and Rachel as they stop too early. Same in regards to Claude and Rachel.

I don't understand - you said Horace was born in the early 1900's and also married in the US, so he presumably would have been in the US for at least 15-20 years.  The census records go up to 1930.  I didn't mean that they had to be in the census together - just if they were in the census at all.

Do you have a death certificate for any of them or any other piece of information that would give an age?

The name Rachel Barrett rang a bell and there was a thread on her - 30 August 2010.
In that thread it said that Rachel had been married 3 times.  I believe the first to be to Claude Broyles, second to Horace James Morgan and the third to someone called Phillips.
Rachel's birth was 15 May 1918 Arkansas and she died in 22 nd March 2006 - Midland City, Dale, Alabama Alabama under the name Phillips.

Rachel appears on the 1920 Walker, White, Arkansas

Freda Grham 25 Rory L Barrett 29 Obera Barrett 7 Louther Barrett 5 Ruby Barrett 3
Rachel Barrett 1

and 1930 Precinct 6, Nacogdoches, Texas

Bessie J Barrett 43 Luther F Barrett 15 Ruby V Barrett 14
Rachel Barrett 12 Lottie M Barrett 8 James A Barrett 6
John L Barrett 42 Port L Cook 43

I believe that thread may have been from me. Rachel was married to Claude Broyles. I couldn't find her mothers maiden name but the people who worked on it found it.

I haven't been able to find Horace James Morgan on a Census on his own due to his name being so common. I haven't been able to find Horace James and there's a lot of Horace Morgan's in Alabama.

I haven't been able to find a death certificate for Horace and Rachel only died recently, and her son's waiting to get the death cert. And the children's birth Cert were changed when Rachel's 3rd husband adopted them.

Hi,

I think the problem is that you are coming forward from the 1940's - The first child I saw born to Claude and Rachel was 1939.  There are no Census records to help - what is available varies state to state and unfortunately is not covering the period you want.

Regards
Sandra
