Hi Everyone,
Am looking for any info re John Richard POPE, bc 1824 Bristol, occ mariner.
Can't find him arr. Australia but he m. Jane MORGAN in Melbourne, Vic, Aust in 1846 and had a family.
On IGI, only one likely to be mine, ie, John Richard POPE Chr. 04 JAN 1824 St Philip And St Jacob'S, Bristol.
Parents were William POPE & Maria ?
Also to this couple, Maria POPE Chr. 07 APR 1822 St Philip And St Jacob'S, Bristol.
Wondering if there is a marriage of Wm POPE to Maria ? and any other sibs.
Also, if this family appears in 1841 census, esp John Richard POPE.
Hoping that someone can add to my scant knowledge of my POPE ancestor/s.
Cheers, Andrea

hi Balcowa
On http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home
all these children were born to a William and Maria Pope in Bristol. I've starred the ones that actually say at St Phillip and St Jacob's. The others just say Bristol. (it gives the exact dates - just to save me typing them all!)
Eliza 1816
Maria 1818
Louisa 1820
Maria 1822 (could be a different family, or the first Maria died, and they named the second again - I have families who did that - quite common)
John Richard 1824
Matilda 1826*
Emma 1827*
Ann Amelia 1830*
Agnes Matilda 1836*
All, some, none may be your family! But a good chance they are.
There is also a marriage William Pope and Maria Jenkins 1816 - very strangely this doesn't give the exact date. I haven't come across this before. This 'pilot' site usually only gives actual entries from registers - not like the IGI where some people, shall we say. may not have obtained as much evidence as others may think necessary! Perhaps somebody can view the actual register for you. It does say St Phillips and Jacob.
Hopefully somebody with access to the 1841 Census will look for them for you - I didn't have much success.
Have just checked the deaths on pilotsearch, and it looks as if both Maria's died in infancy.
Maria born 1818 dies 12 Nov 1820
Maria born 1822 dies 14 Dec 1823
Matilda born 26 Feb 1826 dies 17 Aug 1826
Agnes Matilda born 1836 dies 1837
How sad. No wonder they wanted to leave!
Happy hunting!

Sincere thanks to all for your help! :-)
What would have been the likely age for a man / boy to have become a sailor / mariner? Did they serve an apprenticeship?
Altho, given that he was the only son, I would have thought he'd have stuck around to look after mum and the girls?!
Thanks, Andrea

Andrea,
I think we might be related! I am currently researching my 2nd Great Grandmother and Grandfather.
Their names were Robert Neil and Eliza Neil (nee POPE).
Stories were passed down, but somehow have slightly changed over the years from what I have recently discovered.
Eliza arrived in Sydney, Australia (unmarried) in 1849 on the government assisted ship "Petrel", which departed from London. Eliza's place of birth is listed on the passengers log as Bristol, Gloucestershire, age 32, occupation house servant. This would make her birth year approx 1816. The same as your Eliza Pope, daughter of William & Maria.
It wasn't long after her arrival that she married Robert in Sydney in 1850. He was a sailor who was born in Liverpool, England.
Eliza's death register image that I obtained from Victorian Births Deaths Marriages, unfortunately isn't the best of quality, but appears that her parents names are William Pope and Maria (Wanklyn??). I believe the Wanklyn to really be Jenkins, I am currently waiting on a marriage certificate from NSW to see if the "Jenkins" name can be cleared up.
Bearing this in mind however, as your Eliza had a brother who was also a sailor, I am guessing she met Robert while living in England and travelled to Australia to start a new life with her sailor Robert.
The family stories that were passed to me from my Grandmother about her family and grandparents, was that there was a sailer in the family who died quite young (about 34 years) at sea. Could this be William Pope, Eliza's father? He isn't listed in the 1841 Census with Maria and the children as previously mentioned in this thread.
Another story was also retold about a couple eloping to Australia, which might also explain Eliza's journey to Sydney, as she seemed to travel alone (no other Pope's are listed). If my Eliza and your John were siblings, Eliza was probably following John to Australia.
Eliza and Robert moved to Victoria within a couple of years of marriage and were living in Collingwood at the time of their first child Frederick (my Great Grandfather).
Where was John Pope living in the early 1850's? I am assuming they weren't living far from each other.
Hoping to hear from you Andrea.

Hi Karen,
Definitely seems like we might be related! :-)
If you look at the earlier posts, Eliza was still with mum in 1841 but missing from 1851, altho she could have married/moved, but may well have sailed to Australia!
Have you got the marr. cert yet and did it clarify things?
Cheers, Andrea

Yeah, got the marriage certificate but the names of their parents aren't listed (which apparently was the case in early Australian marriages).
I have come to the conclusion that my Eliza is in fact the brother of your ancestor. The dates and first name fit for this family for around that time in Bristol.
Do you know much about William & Maria? Photos or any more info would be great!
Thanks Karen

Further research found: -
I have found details on Louisa Pope (Eliza & John Richard's sister).
Eliza Pope married Robert Neil on 12 Dec 1850 in the parish of St James, Sydney, Australia. The witnesses were George Davis of Crown Street & Louisa Johns of Bathurst Street.
Louisa Johns was Eliza's sister. Along with her husband Frederick and daughters Frances & Laura, she traveled to Australia with Eliza on the "Petrel". Immigration records (21 Nov 1849) show Louisa's parents as William and Maria Pope (mother living in Bristol), with a brother living in Melbourne.
The Johns family are found in the 1841 England Census:-
Frederick Johns, 23
Louisa Johns, 20
Louisa Maria Johns, 7 weeks
All born Gloucestershire, England
Residing at Meadow St, St Paul Bristol
Ref: HO107/374/38/17
