Title: Help please - Sarah Evans nee Britain
Post by: phillevo on Sunday 26 September 10 07:22 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,

I found a marriage record for Sarah on Trevethin Parish Record Transcripts, but she seems to disappear after the 1851 Census.

She married Thomas Evans in 1835 and they had 8 children including my great-grandfather, Francis Evans. I can't find a record of her, burial etc at all.

Her maiden name could have been any of the following, Britain, Brittain or Brittan etc.

If anyone could help with any info, I'd be most thankful.

Cheers

Phil Evans

Thank you - I believe this is the family - Francis aged 16 is my great-grandfather. I think the daughter born 1853 is Laura?

I assumed that as Thomas's wife Sarah doesn't appear on the census that she may have died - but he's listed as married as you say. My fault for not reading the census correctly.

I wonder what happened to her as I can't as I can't find anything for her after the 1851 Wales Census.

Cheers

Phil

Thank you cardiff,

With my limited experience in doing family research I've not been able to find Sarah either, but will keep trying.

Appreciate you taking the time, cheers

Hi

This doesn’t help much but I think this is the family in 1851.

1851 census: HO107 Piece: 2449 Folio: 168 Page: 3; (crown copyright, care of the TNA)
Living at Sowhill (Upper), Trevethin

EVANS, Thomas, head, married, 40, b. 1811, Carpenter & Joiner Journeyman
EVANS, Sarah, wife, married, 31, b. 1820
EVANS, Thomas, son, 12, b. 1839
EVANS, Eliza, dua, 10, b. 1841
EVANS, Alfred, son, 8, b. 1843
EVANS, Francis, son, 6, b. 1845
EVANS, David, son, 4, b. 1847
EVANS, Morris, son, 2, b. 1849
All born Trevethin, except Thomas who was born Bickner, Gloucestershire

Cardiff has done the hard work and found them in 1861, where Thomas states he is married. I searched for Sarah elsewhere but couldn’t find her.

Assuming  that she died in the Trevethin area, then this is the Pontypool registration district.  Since Sarah doesn’t appear to have a middle name there is only one record for this district that fits if she died between 1861 and 1871.

Deaths Mar qtr 1861  EVANS  Sarah  Pontypool  11a 91

However, this is the March quarter which would mean she would have died before the census date of 7th Apr 1861 and Thomas states he is married on the census. Like Cardiff I am wondering if a mistake was made and she died before the census.

If a mistake was made and she died between 1851 and 1861, then there are a number of possible deaths within the Pontypool reg district (the index does not specify the age at death.) I counted at least eleven. Daughter Sarah was born about 1853 which narrows it down slightly.

If you are determined to find a death record, you could try emailing/ringing the Pontypool register office to ask for their advice. A search spanning 3 years should not cost you anything however a search covering ten years probably would.

If Sarah did not die in the Pontypool area then your chances of finding a death record are probably low, unless you find something like a burial record for her.

Hi petercat
I agree with your findings. I did not give 1851 census because phillevo already had that.
phillevo do you have the death of Thomas Evans ? as they could be buried together, we know that in 1871 sarah had died because Thomas was a widow on census.
you could apply for death certificate that petercat has suggested and ask only that you will have the certificate if it states sarah is the wife of thomas or give names of children that could have poss registered the death long shot but worth a try.
cheers cardiff  ???

Hi cardiff and petercat,

Maybe the enumerator did make a mistake on the 1861 census, noting Thomas as married instead of being a widower.

As for a death of Thomas, I have this:

14/3/1872, Thomas, Evans, , 63, , , , , Upper Bridge Street

from the Trevethin Parish Record Transcripts. The 1871 census has him living in Bridge Street.

Also found on Ancestry:

Deaths registered in January, February and March 1872
Thomas Evans - 63 ? - District: Pontypool Vol: 11a Page: 113

Possibly the Thomas I'm looking at I think. Nothing else on Sarah as yet and I'll consider contacting the  Pontypool Registry for a certificate as you suggest as I'd like to know.

Thanks very much for your help once again.

Cheers

Phil
