Hi,
I am seeking any information on John Drake, born aprox 1773 (age taken from 1841C) born in Bloomsbury Middlesex.
His first wife was Maria Storey (Story) on 7 Dec 1805 in Camden Middlesex. No details known.
His second wife was Elizabeth Lane, born 17 Oct 1784 in Rutland. They are described as widow and widower, and marry on 17 July 1811 at St Mary's in Portsea Hants. John is described as a Stage coach driver. They later have 8 children, one of whom is Thomas Carter Lane Drake, born 27 June 1819.
Any help on John, and his marriages, or where he comes from, Maria, etc etc, any help SO much appreciated!
Many thanks in advance,

7 Dec 1805, St George Bloomsbury
John Drake Esquire of this Parish Batchelor and Maria Story of the Parish of St Andrew Holborn in the County of Middlesex Spinster
Were married in this Church by Licence this Seventh Day of December
in the Year One Thousand Eight Hundred & five by me A.P.Poston Curate
This Marriage was solemnised between us: John Drake, Maria Storey
In the Presence of: Geo. Story, Matt White
Bride, Groom & witnesses all signed, John Drake used Esquire so would be a gentleman with some money.
I can't find John Drake's baptism in St George Bloomsbury (parish register search), St Andrew Holborn (IGI P batch numbers), or, St Giles In The Fields (parish register search) (the three big churches in the locality). There are Drake family baptisms at St Andrew Holborn around that time. There is a John Drake baptised at St Martin In The Fields in 1775, which is very close.
Maria Story isn't listed in St Andrew Holborn IGI listings, but there are lots of Story family baptisms around that time in there.
There is a submitted entry in the IGI for a Maria Story, wife of John Drake & the marriage entry listed correctly. Maria's birth is listed at 17 Nov 1783, & her father as George (same as one of the marriage witnesses). There is also a submitted entry for Maria's birth at the same date at Silkworth Hall, Durham, but it also says her death date is in 1876. If there's any truth in any of this submitted information you'll need to dig for it, but I'd be very sceptical about it being correct.

Hi Copperbeech5
I think the information contained in gothitjulie's post is very similar and reaching the same conclusion that there seems a mismatch of families here and a strong divide of class between them. They are unlikely to be connected.

Dear gothitjulie, and Valda,
Firstly I am so sorry to miss gothitjulie of my first vote of thanks, I was so excited to read the reply (and not at base) and I read it fast, and didn't concentrate, but thank you too!
I have just inherited this family folder so in honesty I am feeling my way with it to begin with, working from someone else's notes is a bit scary!
I agree I think we have 2 lots of things going on, and yes that is my lot in the 1841C. But on Baptism records they are all over the shop, (will try and look those out tomorrow) But was very interested to hear from gothitjulie that there are a good few Drake baptisms in the relevant London area, because that I am sure is my JD.
Thanks again, I am going to confir with another relly tomorrow (I hope) so will try to be a bit more helpful!
Thanks again.

Personally I wouldn't be too pleased to find my ancestors were around that area of London, it's a complete pain for genealogy because of records being held at either LMA (online images at Ancestry), Westminster Archives (not online), or still with the church (e.g. St Giles In The Fields), & much of it just hasn't been indexed.
I too have families who were in these bits of London/Middlesex around that time & I seem to spend most of my time trying to find them. Doesn't help that the area is the same today as it was then...i.e. people move around a lot & it's densely populated.
During the 18th & 19th century, the population was increasing rapidly, so you'll find that parishes became subdivided over time (St George Bloomsbury is an example, opened in 1730 as Bloomsbury was built up, it had been part of St Giles In The Fields).
Also, it's worth checking Endell Street Laying In Hospital for baptisms as it served both St Andrew Holborn & St Giles In The Fields parishes, & records baptisms in its own right from around 1750 (before that they were also recorded in the churches in batches every few months).
There are also Drake family baptisms at St Giles In The Fields during the 1750s, so you make find http://nibbla.webs.com/ useful at some stage.

Hi
Not sure how your Hampshire/Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire Drake family tie in with the 'London family' of John Drake esquire or as yet with London?
Thomas Carter Lane Drake's line
JOHN DRAKE
ELIZABETH LANE
Marriage: 17 JUL 1811 Saint Marys, Portsea, Hampshire
Widow and widower
THOMAS CARTER DRAKE
Christening: 04 JUL 1819 Quarrington, Lincoln
Father: JOHN DRAKE
Mother: ELIZABETH
possible second baptism or different Thomas - Sleaford is the birthplace given for Thomas Carter Lane Drake (butcher) on censuses
THOMAS DRAKE
Christening: 16 NOV 1821 New Sleaford, Lincoln
Father: JOHN DRAKE
Mother: ELIZABETH
sibling
MARY ANN DRAKE
Christening: 26 JAN 1817 Quarrington, Lincoln
Father: JOHN DRAKE
Mother: ELIZABETH
buried 17th December 1818 Quarrington infant
Meanwhile in London John Drake esquire married Maria in Bloomsbury and had two daughters baptised there
Known children
John Minshall Drake 1810 Cheriton Kent (father of the 1851 census 'grandchildren' Captain in 46th Regiment)
Caroline Drake 1816
Charlotte Augusta Drake 1818
William Henry Drake (executor of father's will)
William Henry Drake looks to be this man
'William Henry Drake born Coimbra, Portugal 1812- Died London 1882. Was Commissariat of the British Army and was stationed in Western Australia from 1830-1848 and in Hobart from 1848-1850. He married Louisa Purkis in Perth, Australia.'
He secondly married Elizabeth Lucy ? a much younger wife who was born at the Cape of Good Hope and on his death left a will which indicated he had been knighted and was Sir William Henry Drake K.C.B.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/35932591?selectedversion=NBD10127167&c=collection
His father John Drake was from Devon (1851 census) and was still married to his wife Maria who was from County Durham on the 1851 census.
I think you might have to unpick what you have inherited very carefully starting from what is known and proved, even if that means coming back into the C20th and then step by step going back each generation.

Hi,
I too am researching John Drake and his family, specifically his son William Henry Drake who married Elizabeth Lucy Wood (his second marriage to the much younger lady). Elizabeth was born on 16 Aug 1841 Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa (known as the Cape Colony in those days). She married William Henry Drake (as his second much younger wife) on 1 Sept 1863 in Grahamstown. their children were:
1. Ella W b. 1865 New Zealand d. bet Jul-Sept 1945 Honiton, Devon, England. Married an unknown Codrington.
2. Henry G b. bet Jul-Sept 1866 at Ryde, Isle of Wight d. bet Jul-Sept 1910 Honiton, Devon, England.
3. Lucy Beatrice b. 1869 Dublin, Ireland d. ?? Married Capt S C F Jackson 3 Jan 1898 at St. Mary's, Poona, Maharashtra, India.
4. William Barnard b. bet Oct-Dec 1871 London, Middlesex, England d. bet Jan-Mar 1930 Newton Abbott, Devon.
5. Kate Alice b. bet Jan-Mar 1876 London, Middlesex, England mar Dudley Frederick Nevill bet Jul-Sept 1899 at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
If anyone can add any information to this family I would be love to hear from you.
Thanks
Tessa

Thank you so much gothitjulie. In the past three days I have been sent so much information from a friend who has Ancestry and now have full names, dates and some marriages and deaths for all William's children, which is wonderful.
Ella W is Ella Wood who married Alfred Edward Caldecott and then Richard Percy John Codrington.
Henry is Henry George.
Lucy Beatrice mar Capt S C F Jackson
William Barnard & Kate Alice you have posted details.
William's children from his first marriage to Louisa Purkis who he married on 23 Sept 1833 in Perth, Australia are:
Louisa Maria Drake b. 18 July 1836 Perth
John b. 15 Sept 1834 Perth
Laura Mary b. 1 June 1843 Perth
Emily Caroline b. 28 Feb 1845 Perth
Between 1834 and 1843 there were probably more children but as I don't know where he was during this time period I haven't come across them. The above info was sent to me by my friend Sue.
How are you connected to this family?
Tessa

Hi Tessa
I am also a descendant of William Henry Drake, but from his first wife, Louisa Purkis.
In 2001 I graduated with my MA in history - my thesis was entitled, Civilians at War: William Henry Drake and the Commissariat in the Crimean War. I have had access to some letters he and Louisa wrote during the Crimean War as well as a transcript of the Journal he kept around this time. From his Journal I can tell you that Ella Wood Drake was born in Grahamstown before 24 Oct 1864, before he went to New Zealand.
I would like to do more research into him and other commissaries of the time - and am slowly getting to it.
I would also like to publish the Crimean letters and hopefully part of his Journal as well, as there are many students of the Crimean War who are interested in the role of the Commissariat during that time. I am therefore trying to contact descendants of his second family in the hope of tracing the original Journal. You can't help with that in any way, can you?
All the best
Megan
