Hi I am looking for information on a great granduncle who went to Australia and died there. The only definite I have is his date of birth but there may have been a will as money was sent home after he died and I dont believe he was married. I dont know what area he lived in although i have done a few searches on the deaths in each district that had online records to no avail. What do I do next?

Hi Clarah,
Can you give us his name, his birth, when he came to Australia and the approximate time he died...the Aussie Rootschatters are remarkable detectives and I am sure one of them will be able to track him for you. ;D
Cheers

Hi Thanks for your reply.
I have very little detail except he was John Murphy born around 18 July 1885 in Dublin. His fathers name was Christopher and mothers maiden name Higgins. That is about all I know of him. He died bedore the 1950's and I have no idea when he went to Australia but I guess it was as a young man, possibly c 1905.I don't think he married. I think it is a bit of a shot in the dark. But its worth a post.
Thanks

Alot of John Murphys ' appear' on many bdm searches in Australia, an example is just in WA between 1905 - 1950 their over 30 who are listed as having died. Do you have anything else to help narrow the field?

A middle name would be good because there are a many persons named John Murphy in the WA Post Office Directories.

NSW BDM search for John Murphy deaths between 1900 and 1960 gives just one where the father's given name was Christopher.
The link would be to http://www.rootschat.com/links/09v3/
(if that link doesn't work, PM me and I'll see what else I can do)
Cheers

Thanks for all the help, I have given the NSW a go and ordered it, it may be the wrong one as I have no idea where he lived. I think I had seen that record before and I know I had previously looked at any online district and it probably was the closest match. :'(I ll know in three weeks if I have the right person or not!!

Hello there Clarah
just in case you need to get any other certificates from NSW
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,300394.0.html
this link tells you about transcription agents in NSW they are quicker and cheaper to use

@ Clarah,
Let us know how things turn out ... when you eventually get the certificate, that is ;)
3 weeks turnaround is a right pain, true! Not much that can be done about it though!

Usually a lot quicker with a transcription agent most I have waited is 4 days, they will email it to you once they get the copy

I just got the death cert today which was very fast but it was for the wrong person. When I did my search it didn't give me enough info to work out if it was or was not the right person.
All i know is name , parents names , and date of birth and addresses as a child. Would the searchers be of any use? Also Now I have a lovely death cert that may be of use to someone else, what should I do with it?

Oh dear that was a shame
you can send the certificate to Gordon Beach
http://ausbdm.ucoz.org/
He is doing wonderfull thing by collecting as many certificates that he can and then making them available to all to save people the cost etc of getting them.
I have sent him details of all mine and have had a couple of requests from new found family members for them,
Don't know how to help you any furter though with the enormous amount of John Murphy listed.
It is possible the informant did not know his fathers name and it would not show on the death details.

I have gone back and looked at the baptismal record and find John is John L Murphy. I have no idea what the L stands for. Is there any way that would help? He may never have used .
