Please would someone be able to date, clean or colour the carte de visite of this lady for me? I wondered if it was maybe 1870s but not sure! Thank you!

Why colour a nice picture

That's great, thank you very much!

Hat sadly not kept as far as I know! She is a sister of my 2x great grandfather, but am trying to figure out a rough date to decipher which one! Thank you very much for the edited photographs they're brilliant!

As she's in a hat we can't see her hairstyle & as she's in a coat we can't see her dress style.
The pose she's striking is typical of the 1870's but the little bit we can see of her hair which has soft curls at the front is more an early 1880's fashion. The bustle suggests a date of 1883 on to 1889.Without seeing the back of this (which would help) I would suggest early - mid 1880's.

Thank you Jim. Here's a scan of the back of the photo

Thanks very much, that's fantastic!

Although the back looks quite plain the style with sloping name is an early 1880's style,so I'll stick.

Thank you Carolyn, they're fantastic! Love the colours of the second one. Seems like it might have been taken around 1880 then! Still not sure who she is, have narrowed it down to 2 possible people. Does anyone know at what age girls were allowed to put their hair up? That might narrow it down a bit more! Thank you for your help.

Around 17/18 girls began to have adult hairstyles.I would say she's a bit older at early 20's.

In which case I think she's probably one of the older girls- Lucy I B Cooke b. 10th Feb 1859. Possibly taken for her 21st birthday. Thank you for all your help!!

Have just found another photo out of the same person from the same sitting. Not as marked as the other but would be better for a slight clean up if possible!
Thank you!

Hi Chloe,
I don't think it is the same person, the fringe is much softer on the first lady, dressed almost identically, I think you may have two sisters here!

-
Do you think so?! I just presumed that it was the same person in both pictures. It is possible though as there was a lot of girls in the same family! Can you see any differences between them minus the fringe?? Thanks for your help!

Very difficult to pinpoint differences as they are posed differently, however the lips look different to me and the lady leaning over the tasselled thing (sorry don't know what it's called has a "softer" look to her.
The sharper look to the fringe in the other lady indicates naturally thicker straighter hair.

Both lovely photos by the way

I also think similar but slightly different hats!
-
It's the same lady, she's wearing the identical outfit including hat.

Can some clever person put them side by side ... it makes it difficult, swapping from page one to the next page !
I think they are the same girl, but side by side would make it easier ...
-
Tried putting them on again but I couldn't do it! Maybe the hat on the one leaning over looks to have more feathers on?? Unless she just altered the position of it and her fringe between photos! Very confused now!

side by side I hope
-
not perfect, but it can be enlarged on sceen!
-
Now I don't think they are the same girl ! Twins maybe, or perhaps the girl on the right is a year or two younger than the other. Girl on the left seems to have a slightly broader and flatter face; girl on right has a straighter fringe ... but differences are very slight.
I'd say they're twins, or sisters only a year apart in age, who like to dress alike !
Thanks for putting them side by side (and if you click on the pictures they come up bigger !)
-
I'm the same! The more I look at them the more they seem different. Their noses don't look the same, and the lady on the left looks to be wearing a hat with more feathers in. It could just look that way because of the different angles/ picture fuzzyness I suppose. 2 similar aged sisters is very possible because there were 2 girls in the family with only 1 year between them, Ethel Eliza b.1865, and Agnes Maud b.1866
If these photos were taken 1880- 1885 that makes them 15-20ish. There was also a Lucy, b. 1859; Amy, b.1860; and Mary b.1854! Have been told that the other photo I put in a separate post on here is Amy. So that leaves Lucy, Mary, Ethel and Agnes!
Yes thanks for putting them on here again! I couldn't figure out how to do it. Makes it much easier! :)
-
After enlarging them and cogitating, I'd say the girl on the left was about 17 - 18, and the girl on the right is younger ... maybe 16 ? She is also tidier in appearance ! Hat feathers neat and tidy, and collar edges as they should be, wheras the girl on the left has her top button hooked over her collar ...
What a problem !

Wow you're very observant! I would never have noticed the button if you hadn't pointed it out! So the photo is possibly c. 1883 then. I will try to find out when the photographer was at the address on the back of the cdv, might help a bit!
Thank you very much for your help :)
