Title: David P. Imlach 1904 - 1931 Chicago
Post by: Oramazda on Thursday 23 September 10 21:21 BST (UK)
David Primrose Imlach was born in 1904 in Glasgow Scotland and died in 1931 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois (apparently married to a Virginia ?). His father was David Jamieson Imlach b. abt. 1876 near Fraserburgh, Scotland. David Snr. was married in 1903 in Glasgow, Scotland to Jane McNaught b. 1874 Glasgow, Scotland .
Does the above ring any bells for anyone as I've nothing on David Snr. and Jane's death and I've no idea if they came to Chicago through Canada or a US port.
Any help gratefully received.

It's interesting that David Jr. is buried in Kentucky?  If he was a salesman it's possible he didn't live in Chicago but did business there.  Also, I didn't find any border crossing's from Canada to the US that would indicate David Sr. came to the US as all.

Name: David P. Imlach
Death Date: Nov 14 1931 Chicago Illinois
Father: David Imlach
Father's birthplace: Frasburg, Scotland
Mother: Jeanne Mcnaught
Mother's birthplace: Glasow, Scotland
Occupation: Salesman
Burial date: Nov 17, 1931
Burial place: Greenville, Kentucky

Thanks for your efforts it certainly gives me new areas to research. I suspect you're correct in that he died in Chicago where he was selling and it would be interesting to find out what.
I know Jane's Grand Uncle had extensive family in Canada, two in the legislature, so I guess it makes sense that she went to Canada only her cousins were in Ontario and I've no record of anyone being in Nova Scotia. Then I suppose it was after all only a port of entry.
David Snr. is giving me a headache as, despite my living in Scotland, believing him to be born in a hamlet near Fraserburgh I can't find a record of his birth nor a marriage for his parents. If it was easy we'd all be doing it!

Is it possible that David and Virginia were living in Illinois, but that Virginia's family was from Kentucky and he was buried in their family plot or cemetery?

Someone has a tree with David Primrose Imlach.   David's spouse supposedly was Virginia Smith, born April 3, 1902 in Paradise, Kentucky.  She passed away on June 21, 1984, in South Carolina.  Virginia apparently had three husbands; she married Julius Wilson Helmick in 1933 and he passed away in 1962.

David's date of birth is recorded as April 17, 1929 and his passing is noted as November 14, 1931.

David and Virginia were apparently married "in Little Church Around Corner, NY."

There is actually a church in New York named "Little Church Around (the) Corner."  There are quite a few internet sites that mention it.

Their site:

It looks like Virginia and her parents were living in Central City, Muhlenberg Co., Kentucky in 1920.

Hi Lisa,
From a cold Scotland. What a mine of information and links. Many thanks for your efforts as it certainly helps to clear up some long standing loose ends. I don't have access to World Ancestry at home but I'll certainly be following through on my next visit to the FHS where I can get access.

It is of note that that I have David's birth certificate and he was born on the 19th April 1904 at 20.00hrs when the family were living at Bannatyne Avenue, Glasgow. He would have had a very interesting short life if he'd been born in 1929!

Just if anybody is interested from the above information I've now discovered that David junior had two siblings. Florence Margaret b. 1908 in Glasgow who emigrated to Canada in 1930 to marry a Thomas Thorburn (passenger manifest says 'joining fiancé). They returned in 1933 though I've yet to discover if they went back or stayed.
George Charles went out to Canada with his father in March 1931 to join his sister and both returned in May 1932 to rejoin his mother/wife in Glasgow. What happened thereafter I've to discover as I can't find death certificates in Scotland for any of them as yet.

Hi Oramazda:

You are quite welcome for the help.

Would you have George Charles' date and place of birth, please?  We might be able to find him.  After a quick search, I don't see Florence Thorburn.

If the family returned to Canada, their deaths may be difficult to find as "recent" Canadian records are not generally available.

George Charles Imlach born 1913 Glasgow shown as being a Clerk travelling with his father David Jamieson Imlach, a baker (Imlack on one record)
I now believe Florence Margaret Imlach (shown as Emlach on passenger manifest) went out to join her fiancé Thomas Thorburn in 1930. She on the SS Letitia in late 1930 he on the SS Tuscania in early 1930. If I've got the right man they were probably childhood sweethearts living in Dennistoun, Glasgow and he became a draughtsman.
It's a little frustrating having got so far and being unable to complete the job and the fact that her elder brother died in Chicago and was buried in Kentucky compounds the problem of where they ended up.
Differing spellings doesn't help either!!!

Hi Oramazda:

I haven't forgotten you; I didn't see anything last night and thought I would try again tonight.

Perhaps you've already checked this out, but on the England & Wales index for deaths is:
Florence Margaret Thorburn, born 1908, passed away 1983.  "Inferred county" was Leicestershire.  She may have been born in January.

I cannot view further details, sorry.

I will have another look for everyone in Canada and the States.

Hello Oramazda,

While surfing the net I happened to google my own name and was so surprised when I saw my relatives details coming up.  My name is David Floyd Imlach, my late father was George Charles Imlach and my uncle, his brother, was David Primrose Imlach after whom I am called.  While my information regarding David is somewhat sketchy, I see that there are references to him being a salesman but my information is that he was an Analytical Chemist who worked for the Limmer and Trinidad Lake Ashphalt Company.  I was born in 1945 so never knew him however I have photos of his burial casket and believed him to have been buried in Bowling Green, Kentucky.   I'm sure I can help with other family connections so please get in touch.

Regards.

David

Hello David, good to hear from you. David P. Imlach's father David Jamieson Imlach b. 1876 Rathen, Aberdeenshire married my first cousin twice removed Jane McNaught on 18th June 1903 in Glasgow. I know both returned to the UK from Canada in the 1930's but don't where they ended up either here or back in Canada. Sister Florence b. 1908 married Thomas Thorburn 1930 Winnipeg I believe they ended up somewhere in England. Brother George b. circa 1913 died 2004. Any loose ends you can help me with gratefully received likewise any help I can give you.
Regards
Oramazda

Hello Oramazda,

Thanks for your prompt reply and the information you've provided.  I'm sure I'll be able to assist in some fashion although I don't know how much information you have.  Of interest in relation to the McNaught side, my cousin, the daughter of my Aunt and Uncle, Florence and Tommy Thorburn, who lives in Leicester is now aware of our correspondence and will be of great help in that connection.  For your information, both the McNaught and Imlach families settled in Glasgow with the Thorburns subsequently moving to Leicester whereby the Canada connection finished.  Give me a little time and I'll dig out what I can and be back in touch.  Can I be cheeky and ask whether you are male or female and can I assume you are in the Aberdeenshire area.

Regards

David
