Title: Alness Ross's
Post by: myross on Wednesday 22 September 10 07:16 BST (UK)
Hi Im trying to trace any living relatives who are descended from my great grandparents Finlay Ross and Elizabeth Stewart.

Finlay Ross b: 1832 at Resolis, Ross and Cromarty
                   d: 23rd feb 1889 at Alness

Elizabeth Stewart b: 1840 at Fodderty, Ross and Cromarty
                              d: 28th july 1916 at Alness

They are buried at Alness Parish Church

They lived at 71 Main street Alness  in 1881 with their 6 children : Harriet, Finlay, Lilias, Donald  [my grandfather] Elizabeth and Peter .

Finlay and Elizabeths son Finlay went on to be the blacksmith at Foulis Smithy where he died in 1951 aged 83 he was at that time survived by a son Finlay who may have came to live at Dingwall , not really sure .

I would be grateful if anyone with any info could help me please or any members of this family would like to get in touch please post me on this site or reply by email

Thankyou so much

have you tried looking at scotlandspeople for the death certificate of finlay d1970, it should have the informant's name and address; it might be a good starting point.

alternatively, you could try writing a letter for publishing in the ross-shire journal or alness' local community newsletter (sorry can't remember the name at the moment). you may get a good response. :)

let me know if you don't get any further and i'll see if i can think of something else for you. (i'm quite local to the area)

kind regards,
Lorna

p.s did you get to Alness heritage centre; i'm told they are really helpful but haven't been in yet myself :)

Hi Lorna

I certainly will try the 1970 link for Finlay Ross deceased, thanks for that tip, I will also put an ad in the Ross-shir e journal and keep fingers crossed.

I did in fact go to the Alness heritage site and they were absolutely wonderful , Joan Ross who is in charge actually took us to the grave as we were on holiday with a coach trip and did not have a car , the other staff were amazing trying to find links for me but to no avail.

I however left some details with them but as yet Ive not heard anything,
I will look for the Alness community paper and see if I can subscribe to it on line then I can  place an ad.
I do have a  monthly newspaper of which Joan Ross is the editor it is called Alness and District Times, I wonder if this is the one you mean.

Thanks again Lorna for your tips and your offer of help  it is greatly appreciated

Kind Regards
Myra

Hi Lorna

I tried your suggestion about looking up Finlay Ross's death in 1970 , he died in Dingwall but I cant obtain an image to get the informant, I m trying to guess his age as to when he married if he ever did and try that angle. I would be grateful for any tips you may have .
I cant seem to be able to place an ad in the Ross-shire journal for some reason , Im going to try the Dingwall papers

I did however get a marriage certificate for Finlay and Jane Fraser they were married in Dingwall on the 7th december 1906 , at the National Hotel.  her parents were Hugh Fraser [farmer] and Lilias Fraser nee Munro.

thankyou
kind regards
Myra

Hi Lorna

You have been to a lot of trouble for me and  I cant thank you enough,
My what a sad end to Finlay.

I did actually visit Foulis Smithy when I was up there thanks to Joan Ross and the old buildings were still there altho' there are new owners who seem to have renovated the old house, and to respect their privacy we kept a respectable distance .
Thanks again Lorna you have been a great help I will follow this lead.

Hi Lorna

This is indeed  Hugh and Lillias grave, they were Finlay's [blacksmith] wifes parents and Lilias was in fact a Munro.
I have Finlay and Janes marriage certificate and they were witnesses.

I has asked for an ad to be put in the RJ I cant do it on line as I have problems with my computer email, so I sent thru my own  email privately.

I also have the 1881 census and the one before that thankyou when Finlay was 38 and elizabeth was 37, the only children they had then was Harriet aged 5, Finlay aged 4 and Lillias 11 mths [ thats not too clear ].
My grandad Donald wasnt born then.
Thats all I have up till now .

I wonder if you could help me with the address 71 Main street ALNESS now High street, I went to investigate when I  was up there and thought I had found finlay and elizabeths family house of 1881 but was told the numbers aren't what they were then and they had turned the whole street around which means that the numbers are starting from  the other end , its all very confusing .

There seems to be some papers missing regarding the original layout of the street, I was hoping to get some pictures of the old house but dont know which one it is.

Could you advise me on this as to where I would get any info
Alness Heritage Centre tried very hard without success,  they mentioned something about a place in Edinburgh that may have information but I dont know where to start

Thanks Lorna
Myra

hi there,

there are a great range of maps for family history researchers at : http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html but even when using the 'enhanced zoom' on the 1880 Alness map which has incredible detail, there is no way to tell the numbers on the high street.

i know there is a victorian map of that area on ebay just now, but i don't know if it would have enough detail either. Amazon might be a possibilty but i haven't had a chance yet to look, sorry.

another trip to the library might help, but unfortunately i can't get there now until next month...

websites that might help:
ambaile.org.uk
invergordonarchive.org
scran

or inverness has a really good archive now, i'm not sure if they have a searchable website but i have phoned them in the past and asked if they had specific records and they were very good and even went looking when they weren't sure and phoned me back later. http://www.highland.gov.uk/leisureandtourism/what-to-see/archives/highlandcouncilarchives/

below is a link to an image from ambaile of Alness high street c1910...
http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/component/image?id=43728&zoom=2

sorry i can't do any more at the moment, but let me know how you get on and if you still need anything when i get back, i'll try and get to the library for you then. i'll also let you know if/when your query appears in the rsj.

hope i've been at least a little helpful :)

kind regards,
Lorna.
p.s feel free to p.m me if you'd rather and i will send you my email address instead of posting publicly...

Hi,

Very new to this, so please correct if out of order.

We're trying to trace back my ancestor, Elizabeth Ross. This is a long shot given the popularity of the name. We have her marriage certificate for August 1st 1871 to James Hudson Ashton, when she was 23 and he was 29 and a captain in the merchant service. They were married at Trinity Church, Paddington. His father was William Ahston (deceased), hers was John Ross, farmer. Witnesses were Maria Octavia Ashton, and D.G. Ross. Ashton's address was in Kingston upon Hull; hers was given as 10 Celbridge Place, which from census records appears to have been a lodging house of some kind. WE assume that she left Scotland at some stage. There is another relative named, an aunt Rebecca Dogherty, with connections to South Shilds and to Paddington, but we have no way of knowing whether she is an aunt on the Ross side or the Ashton branch.
We have reliable information about the Ashtons but would like to track Elizabeth further back. The mose intriguing information is that she describes herself as 'Alness resident' in the 'where born' section of the  1911 census. We have trawled the data but can't find a John Ross with a daughter Elizabeth in the Alness area at the relevant time. Nor can we identify a gravestone that might tally.

Any suggestions how we proceed most gratefully received,

Bruce
