Hi All,
Just to let you know the lineup for Series 3 is as follows:
Magda Szubanski
Tina Arena
Shane Bourne (comedian)
Rod Marsh (cricketer)
Georgie Parker
Paul Mercurio
Broadcast will commence on 28th November, but not sure of running order yet.
Also we have been commissioned to produce a fourth series, so I am busy casting for that, to be shot next year.
Look forward to your feedback.

So glad to hear Series 3 will be commencing in November.

Great stuff - thanks, Diana! :D
As a cricket fanatic, I will really look forward to the episode on Rod Marsh.
Very pleased to know a fourth series is being prepared. You can see that all of us on here really look forward to each series!

Hi Marie, I think I will keep schtum until the end of the series about which ones are my favourites and look forward to hearing your honest thoughts about each episode. However..........................I can tell you that Rod Marsh's WDYTYA? is great as he brings his dry sense of humour to the show.............and I am biased as I did the research and was assistant producer on that one :)
-
Excellent, cant wait ;D
-
Fabulous! ;D Thanks for letting us know Diana!
There's one person on that list who irritates me (but I bet that'll turn out to be the programme I like the best) and one I have mixed feelings about ... time will tell. ;)
Overall a pretty good balance of celebs I think. Are we taking a few trips to Europe this series Diana? ;D
Really looking forward to it.
-
Good on you Ruskie for speaking your mind, as always.... :)
And yes, some trips to Europe and beyond are on the cards. But also some great Australian stories too.
All will be revealed :)

I'm an Aussie living in London and have missed all the Australian episodes of this show.
Are they available to purchase somewhere? I'd love to watch them.

They appear to be available from the SBS shop. (I didn't even know there was one :-[) Try Googling for the link.
You'll need to check to see if they'll ship abroad - it might add up to be quite expensive.
Maybe a friend or relative in Australia can buy them and send them to you? I think the ABC Shop sells them.
I'm not sure if Australian DVD's are compatable with the UK systems (I think an adaptor used to be required for 'videos' many moons ago).
Alternatively you may find downloadable versions on the internet.
They're well worth watching and of the same great quality as the UK series.

Sounds like a good mix. ;D

Sorry to be a spoilsport, but why does it appear on SBS where I can't receive the signal (I don't believe I'm alone in this regard)
If there is enough demand could it be repeated on the ABC for those in the same situation as me?

Oh no! That's a shame Les. :(
I think some have been on the ABC ... or might that have been the English series? :-\
-
Thank you Ruskie. My troubles started with Digital transmission, plasma etc., but this is not the forum for TV problems. I did see the series featuring Jack Thompson in one of the episodes, probably Series 1. Will never forget Jack describing his Convict ancestor as "Australian Royalty". Anyway, the ABC doesn't have advertisements, yet!

Les,
We had the same problem receiving SBS. I complained to my husband in a language I could not repeat on here.
He had a new Antenna installed - now we receive SBS without any problems.
Perhaps it may be worth looking into.

Fantastic, Diana,
Thank you so much for letting us know 8)
I'm looking forward to the Rod Marsh episode too.
Margaret :D

most English DVD players are now multi-region... but its advisable to check the specs of your own model first before sending off for the DVDs 8)
Such a shame they don't show the Oz series here in the UK, the research and story telling is brilliant.
-
Looking forward to the new series. Not just Rod Marsh satisfying the sports fan in me but Tina Arena and Paul Mercurio could give me hints on researching the Italian side of my family.
-
Woohoo! Fantastic!! ;D Can't wait....I loooooove WDYTYA especially the Aussie version as you get to see some of the more remote parts of our beautiful country in all of it's glory :D
Keep up the good work Diana and team and well done for previous episodes.

it is possible to download earlier episodes . You will need somthing like Real Player. ;) ;) :)

For the next series of Australian W.D.Y.T.Y.A. I would suggest Mercia Deane-Johns(Actress who plays Jake's mum on Packed to the Rafters). From what she has told me she knows of her family history it sounds VERY interesting.I don't know if she would agree to do it but it would make a good episode.

SBS have announced the broadcast dates:
27th Nov - Magda
5th Dec - Rod Marsh
12th Dec - Tina Arena
19th Dec - Shane Bourne
26th Dec - Paul Mercurio
2nd Jan - Georgie Parker
All subject of course to last minute change!
-
Excellent thanks Diana. ;D
Isn't this a non ratings period though? Not that I'm complaining - it'll be good to see some decent TV during this time - like in the UK when they air all their best programmes over the 'silly season'. ;D
-
Thanks for that, Diana......and I shouldn't miss any episodes this time, all being well....... :D
-
Excellent news!
Like Ruskie, I'll be delighted to have something to watch during the silly season (as well as cricket, of course! ;D )

I'm really looking forward to the new series.
We will be spoilt for choice, as the new UK series (for us in AUST), at least I think it's a new season, starts on BBC Knowledge on Nov 23rd.
Guess I'll have to get the recorder primed.
Alison ;D

And an article in the West, also on the Rod Marsh episode which sounds fascinating! Keep 'em coming Diana!

Hi all just a reminder that Series 3 of the Aus version on WDYTYA? kicks off next Sunday 28th November with Magda Szubanski's episode.
The following week, 5th December, is Rod Marsh's ep and the director Russell Vines and I will be online for a chat after broadcast at 8:30pm AEST. Hope to hear from some of you directly then!
But also forward to hearing your feedback on this forum and hope you enjoy the next six films.

Hello again Diana. Thanks for the reminder. I'm really looking forward to the series (writing a reminder on my calendar now). ;D

TV is SUCH a wasteland between late November and February! I couldn't find a thing to watch last Sunday night - really looking forward to having that void filled by the always-interesting WDYTYA!! ;D

First episode....Magda SZUBANSKI....is over in South Australia.
I have to say I found the episode quite different to any Australian ones we've seen before.......two very interesting and obviously emotional stories ......and there must be so many more like that in the backgrounds of Australia's multicultural society.
But how lucky for Magda to have WDYTYA to help her find all that information.
Dee :)

I enjoyed it too, Dee, what a different life both grandfathers lived yet in some ways so similar.

Um... do we discuss here or on the other thread? :-\
I also enjoyed this programme, and it did have a different "feel" about it though I can't put my finger on why.
A few too many tears for me, or perhaps too many closeups of said tears may be more accurate, though both sides were within living memory so understandable I suppose.
I would have liked to have seen a bit more delving into earlier generations. And did Magda really need to go to Ireland to view the 1901 and 1911 censuses and to have the Irish researcher hand her the relevant documents and tell her about her ancestors? I can view the Irish censuses free on my PC. :)
It's more understandable that she travelled to Warsaw to vist her father's friend. I admit to not fully understanding the politics involved but felt uneasy with the way she simply dismissed her father's killing of his townsfolk as something that "had to be done" or words to that effect ... :-\
I also felt she very easly dismissed and made excuses for her Irish grandfather's early bad behaviour and police record. (Talking here about the assaults rather than any theft of food to live)
I loved the subtitles for the Scottish accent! ;)
I would also like to know what brought the families to Australia ...
They said Magda was in Warsaw 3 years ago for her father's funeral ... did he live in Warsaw and her mother in Australia? Were they estranged?
Just a few thoughts about the show ... ;D
-
Perhaps if Kris wants the discussion on a Magda thread, she can move our posts, Ruskie....but leave the link for Diana, so that she finds it easily. :)

That sounds like a good idea Dee. :)

I've put a link to this thread on the other one. Not sure why Kris would have started it...
Agree with much of what you said, Ruskie. But I think an Irish accent can be as unintelligible as a Scottish one, and they didn't have subtitles for the former!
Many of us have rogue ancestors who may have been convicts and committed a range of crimes. I think we all tend to make excuses on the grounds that they came good in the end and lived an upright life. I don't think Magda is so different in this respect.
I do think that quite often, these WDYTYA episodes seem to be a good excuse for some world travelling which would not be strictly necessary - with some spoonfeeding at the other end. Or am I just envious? ??? ;D

Good Morning all. Sorry I should have been clearer. :-[ I am not very well and nearly missed starting the thread before the episode last night. :-[ Diana is out of the country without internet access for the weekend so was unable to start it herself. Far better to run weekly threads than continuing with one long thread. Diana is looking forward to reading our thoughts.
You will notice Trystan has given Diana a news feed for these episodes at the top of the Australia Board. Either Diana or myself will start a thread each week. Please discuss on the weekly threads thank you. I would ask that you do not start extra threads, as I will be unable to merge them because merging alters the URL and Trystan's lovely link will not work if I have to merge. ;D
Sorry but for the same reason I will be unable to split and merge your comments here, so be sure to add them to the new thread. Thank You.
Kris :)

Thanks, Kris, for the explanation. :)
I've posted an appropriate quote on the other thread.
Hope you're feeling better before long.

I'm a Canadian. Can't get any more of the shows....though we have looked, and we viewed the one you are talking about. It is absolutely great, fascinating, and I actually learned something that may pertain to one of my families. Anyone who knows how to get this show, purchase or download, Australian, or English so we can enjoy a few more?
Thanks
-
Heathgirl, you can buy the DVDs of each series but you'd need to check that they would work on your DVD players......
Here's a couple of websites to check out......

Hi, thanks for the sites. I will have to do some research.
I do know that English DVD players and Canadian aren't compatible or at least weren't the last time I was going to purchase something in England. Janice

Hi all, just wanted to let you know that "Who Do You Think You Are?" Series 3 has been officially nominated as "Most Popular Factual Programme" category in this year's Australian TV Logies.
Also to let you know that Series 4 is well under way and you can expect the next six episodes to be on air earlish next year.
Regards
Diana

Great news, Diana! :D
I don't usually watch the Logies, but I might have to this year........
