Hi All I am looking for info on James Black 1800 - 1892 ( Australia )and wife Margaret Linton b 1798 and died in Australia. Both are said to have been born in Londonderry and marr there as well and had 7 children . They emmigrated to Aust in 1843 - 44 on board the "Manilus" and lived in Geelong, Victoria.
I have James' father as Robert Black and Margaret's parents were James Linton and Sarah Cassidy. I have all the family in Aust but nothing before leaving Ireland. Can anyone please help. Thank you Val

Statutory records of births started in Ireland in 1864. Protestant and non conformist marriages 1845, RC marriages 1864. So the events you are interested in all pre-date that. You'll be heavily reliant on church records, if they still exist, to trace this family. Really you need to know which religion they were and which parish or townland they came from to trace them.
The names are both very common. There are 368 Black entries and 83 Linton entries in Co Londonderry alone, in the 1901 census, so without some way of narrowing the field, it's a needle in a haystack.

Elwyn Thanks for that advice. I think I knew that was the case when I wrote ,but I had hopes that someone might know something about the Family. I know that they were protestant and family story says that father James Linton was supposed to be titled. The only Linton Title I could find finnished in the 1860's, so no help there. It was said James dissapproved of Margaret marrying James as he was beneath her station, being their stable hand and he dissowned her, I couldn't find anything on that either, I did find she had a sister Elizabeth who marr Benjamin Jack again in Londonderry and came to Aust with her family and James and Margaret and that's about all I know , So if anyone can help I thank you Val

Yes I'm still looking for anything on James Black and Margaret Linton. My husbands grandmother was their grand-daughter and I can't get any further back than these two. Val

Hello Val
My maiden name was BLACK.
I am descended from James BLACK who was my 3rd great grandfather.
Then his son Robert Henry.
Where does your husband fit in? In other words ... who is he descended from?
I am in Australia ... whereabouts are you please?

Hello Val
I live near to the Vic/SA border.
So you are married to Brian.
He is my 3rd Cousin once removed ... according to the family tree program on my computer.
I have your information thanks to another researcher named Wendy JACK (I think), but only as far as Brian's birthdate and the date of your marriage.
I tried to attach a report to this email but it was not an allowable type ... it is a .pdf file.
Can you contact me privately please ... (*)

I have attached the reports I got around the limitations by printing the .pdf files then scanning them to .jpg ... which is allowed.
