I am trying - and failing - to decipher a place name.
In 1873, James Shirran was a Blacksmith. But where? I make out 'St Fergus'; I'm not sure what is before that.
Can anyone help?

Hi
possibly "Hallmoss"?
-
There is a Hallmoss Farm if you googlemap it, a few miles south of St Fergus

Ruth,
Thanks. Works for me!

Hi,
I've recently registered on this site and the first item I opened as a trial was your post from a few weeks back. What attracted my attention was the Shirran name - I have Mary Shirran as a great grandmother with parents Andrew and Elizabeth(MS Murray) - any connection with your Shirran?

jivebunny,
I haven't found a Mary yet; however, there are not that many of them going around, so you never know.
Was Mary (or the parents) from the north east of Scotland?

Yep, its Hallmoss. Not far from me. Anne

Hi Stuartroxy,
With regard to Mary Shirran - she was married to James Donald in 1860 and they were both from Aberdeenshire. Her residence at time of marriage is given as Loop, Fyvie.

jivebunny,
My Shirrans are all from around that area too; Cuminestown, Turriff, Fyvie etc. I'll let you know if I find Mary.
Anne,
Thanks.
