There's just been a show on Radio 4 which was giving tips on tracing ancestors who travelled. I don't know if its possible to listen again to it but its worth trying to find it.
They mentioned that University of Liverpool have some records of travellers.

Hi Nameless and Pels
Thanks for flagging the programme up to others.
I featured in the programme and was the one who mentioned the University of Liverpool Gypsy Collections.
If anyone would like to know more about what they hold there, just let me know.
Best wishes

Oooh, someone who's a radio personality!
I don't have travellers in the family but it was still interesting.

Hi Sharon
I was planning a visit to Liverpool in the near future, from what i've been told there are lot's & lot's of photo's in the special collection, do they hold other info apart from photo's? and how long do you really need to have a good look through the collections?
cheers

Hi China
I reckon you might need a couple of days, depending on how many surnames you're researching.
In addition to all the photos, there are hand-written family trees, volumes full of press cuttings on microfilm plus the correspondence of the Gypsiologists which often includes notes on British Gypsy families. Last time I was there, they had a computerised name index to press cuttings and correspondence in the search room but you'll need to check that this is still available.
There's also a full run of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society (starting from 1888) which contains many articles about British Gypsy families. Unfortunately, there isn't (yet) a master name index to the JGLS. But each annual volume is name indexed.
Best wishes

Highly recommend a visit but its good to have an idea of who you want to find it really helps.
the computer they have is very old but if you type in a name say Smith then everything Smith comes up, but its good to remember if you Smith is married to a Penfold or so on then you might have to look there so its never ending but really good stuff!!
