Hi I am trying to find the birth of my great grandfather James Evans. He married Catherine Jane Jones in 1889. His address was 15 Windsor Street Trecynon Aberdare while hers was Hirwaun Road Aberdare. His father's name was given as Daniel and her father was William both coal miners. Their children were William David abt. 1896, Daniel James abt 1894, Maria abt. 1892, Edward Trevor abt. 1899 and my grandfather Redvers Frederick Buller Evans born 1900. I can find them on various census, last (1911 census) 11 Parc Terrace Senghenydd. However I've hit a brick wall because I cannot find his parents............any help would be appreciated. He was supposed to have been born in Aberdare and was 20 when they were married.
Regards Pamela from Australia

Just realised that this Daniel Evans is at the correct address and has a son of the correct age, but son is Thomas, not James. But surely too much of a coincidence & could warrant further investigation.
1881 has a James Evans, nephew to William Evans b. Pembs, Mathry in Ystradyfodwg RG11/5304 folio 5 pg 3.

Thanks for that and you are right it sounds too much of a coincidence. I know that they were related to the family of William Evans from Thomas & Evans grocery chain and it is likely that he may have moved out of home. I will certainly follow this up and thanks once again. Pamela

just having a little look around. Daniel & Ann had a son called Ebenezer whose birth was registered june qtr 1868, I think. Found him in 1891. His address is 25 Hirwaun Road. RG12/4443 folio 110 pg 3. There's a William Jones married to a Maria at 28a. Are they Catherine's parents, by any chance?
-
Hi again, yes that looks about right. On their marriage certificate Catherine's father's name is William and their address is 37 Hirwaun Road Aberdare. James and Catherine called their first daughter Maria so it looks very promising. I couldn't find the info for the 1871 census for Daniel and Ann (although found the others) can you point me in the right direction. Thanks once again Pamela :)

Hi again, while this all sounds like I'm travelling in the right direction I still cannot find the birth of James or even his name on any census return with Daniel and Ann. Could he have been Thomas James or James Thomas? Feel like I'm going around in circles. Regards Pamela

1871 7 Miners Row, Llwydcoed RG11/5406 folio 15 pg 21
Dan Evans head mar 25 miner b. Pembrokeshire
Anne wife 25 b. Glamorgan
Ebenezar son 3 scholar b. Glamorgan
Thomas son 1 baby b. Glamorgan
Have to say that I'm beginning to think that James & Thomas are one & the same. I've tried following the various brothers of Dan. He does have a brother William, but he's not the William Evans in Ystradyfodwg. Dan's brother William is in Letterston in 1881, enumerated as a Greenwich pensioner. Some of Dan's brothers move to the Aberdare area, but don't have a stray nephew James with them.
Can't see a Thomas James birth reg at the right time. There's one in sept qtr 1868, but he should be 2 at the time of the 1871 census & there are possibilities on the census for him.

Thanks again for your reply and I'm beginning to think that I'm on a wild goose chase and that I've got the wrong James and Catherine. The only facts I am really certain of are that their children were William David abt. 1896, Daniel James abt 1894, Maria abt. 1892, Edward Trevor abt. 1899 and my grandfather Redvers Frederick Buller Evans born 1900. I can find them on various census, last (1911 census) 11 Parc Terrace Senghenydd. After trolling through the millions of records I'm beginning to think that I have the wrong marriage and that has sent me in the wrong direction. Very frustrating. Regards Pamela

do you have a birth certificate for one of the children to confirm Catherine's maiden name? If you do, there's not much choice for a James Evans marrying a Catherine Jones and you would look to have the correct cert.
The address on the marriage cert matches the one on 1891 census for Daniel , so there must be some link. Also Ebenezer living very close to Catherine's parents would have given the couple a chance to meet.

Yes, after mulling it over I still think we are on the right track. I haven't got any birth certificates unfortunately but will endeavour to secure at least my grandfathers. Have been in touch with another Evans branch and apparently Daniel's brother was Ebenezer (born c1850) also and one of his daughters married a Daniel Francis. So that cannot be coincidence. Thanks for all your help and will be in touch when I get certificate. Regards Pamela :)

I'd spotted the Ebenezer Evans born Letterston which made me think I probably had the right Daniel. it's just the Thomas/James thing that's a pain. Perhaps he just didn't like Thomas!
;D

Hi again, well after tidying up my files I realised I did have my grandfathers birth certificate which definately states Catherine Jane Jones was his mother. And yes I am beginning to think you might be right, perhaps he didn't like the name Thomas? I know I've come across that in family history before. Might try and find a birth for Thomas and send for that certificate to see if his second name might have been James. Thanks once again for all your help. Regards Pamela

Hi I'm still on the track of James & Catherine Jane (nee Jones) Evans (my mother's grandfather and grandmother) and would like to know the dates of their deaths. It would be after 1911 because I have the 1911 census and they lived at 11 Parc Terrace Senghenydd with their children Redvers Frederick aged 11, Edward Trevor 13, William David 16 and Daniel James aged 18.
James Evans Collier is also named on Redvers marriage certificate in 1919 and the family may have been living at 26 Parc Terrace Senghenydd. Any help would be appreciated. Regards Pamela

there are too many death records for James Evans to work out which may be yours.
Vague possible for Catherine, age is out though.
Catherine J Evans 80 dec qtr 1957 Pontypridd vol 8b pg 589

Hi wondered if the electoral rolls could be searched for James and Catherine Evans. In 1911 (according to census) they lived at 11 Parc Terrace Senghenydd and in 1919 (according to info on marriage certificate of one of their children) they lived at 26 Parc Terrace Senghenydd. Regards Pamela

I don't have access to electoral registers. Also, Catherine was unlikely to be on the register in 1911 unless she could vote in local elections. She wouldn't have been able to vote before the 1918 reforms which also brought in annual registers.
