Judging by Hugh Wallis' site

a large gaggle of HARRISes appeared in Headington in the late 1770s. Does anyone know where they came from?

If they stayed around Headington and lived into their 80s, you might just get lucky with the 1851 census. :)

Woth a look if all else fails.

That John could be the one baptised in Headington 30 JUL 1770 to a William and Rica  ??? "Rica" must surely be a mistranscription of something like Rita, Rosa or Rebecca. The 1700s was to early for Rita really, Rosa wasn't too fashionable (as far as I know) I know in the Oxford area, so I guess Rebecca is the most likely?

Where did William come from; that is the £1 million question. The IGI has the following possible marriages:-

About 1749      Charlbury          Rebecca Harris
1757 Banns     Waterperry     REBECCA JONES
1760 Banns     Launton             REBECCA ARNOLD
19 NOV 1770       Shipton Under Wychwood     REBECCA SOUCH

Most of which look flakey, although the Waterperry one wins in terms of being closest to Headington. That Wm & Rebecca seem to have had a few kids and perhaps disappeared around the time Wm & Rica appeared in Headington; shame the IGI has no burial details to see if Wm & Rebecca are missing from Waterperry burials.

I am just going by the IGI/Hugh Wallis sites for these E.Oxon parishes so don't have burial details. Over on the West and down South I have most of the CDs, but am a bit out of my usual stomping ground Headington/Waterperry way.

I have found John Harris b 30/July/1770, son of William and Alice Harris, St Andrew Parish Registers
and just to complicate things there is another John Harris b 4/April/1763 son of James and Elizabeth Harris.

I also came across an entry in Jacksons Oxford Journal 12/12/1801 of a William Harris of St Peter in the East dying of excess drink,
considering that two of Johns sons, Richard and Edward were both living there in the 1841 census there may be a connection.
