Title: deegan westmeath
Post by: cyril walsh on Monday 20 September 10 10:58 BST (UK)
i am looking for info on an anne deegan born 1863 and married a thomas adamson from moate.
thomas was a shoemaker, they are on the 1901 census but not on the 1911 census.
thomas seems to have had a few brothers also shoemakers, none of these are in the 1911 census either. were they omitted or did they emigrate.
any help in solving this puzzle would be really appreciated.

Hello Cyril (slightly off topic) - My ggrandfather was Joseph Adamson a shoemaker from Moate, Westmeath so there is likely a connection. I'm fairly new to genealogy but I'd be happy to share my information with you. I'm new to this site as well so still finding my way around - Kevin

hello jack
thank you so much for your reply, that thomas would be francis adamsons first cousin.
i think the adamsons were omitted from the 1911 census as i cannot find any of them .
6 or 7 families all missing, any idea how i could find out why they are missing.
best wishes

This is totally off looking for Francis - but it shows Adamsons were in Moate a long time back and lead interesting lives!

A reward for the arrest of William Kennedy of Birr
Faulkners Dublin Journal 5th January 1754
On the 16th Nov. last Wm. Kennedy son of Widow Kennedy, Birr with about 10 men, broke open the house of Wm. Adamson, Balnalack, near Moate, Co. Westmeath, in the dead time of the night, with intent to carry away forcibly, Mrs. Anne Barlow, whoever secures said Wm. Kennedy, so that he be brought to justice shall receive 15 guinea reward from the said Mrs. Barlow.

At the other end of things, they are still Adamsons in Moate:http://www.rip.ie/death_notices_detail.asp?NoticeID=115097

Of course all of thse may not be relevant- seem to relate to a wealthy C  of I family, but I have come accross situations where a younger son marries an RC wife, and gradually changes into trade - and it is not a frequent name. Pm

Hi Cyril, Mine were from Balinea, just outside Mullingar. Do you have any more details of yours, as I have some stray BMD's I picked up during the years.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/reading-room/environment-geography/physical-landscape/lakelands-of-westmeath/lough-ree/islands-of-lough-ree/inchmore/island-life/

Mentions that several generations of Walshes (with an e) lived on the Islands

Is a lovely publication by the Inland Waterways on the Islands.

You might find this interesting:

Hello Cyril

Saw your posts of 2010. Did you find the family of Francis Adamson? I came across a tree on Ancestry with his family-it contains photographs.

I am looking for the family of Anne Adamson born about 1800 Moate Westmeath married to Dennis Leape also of Moate.

Regards Heather

Welcome to RootsChat Tony
A lot more records are online since this thread was started.
Have you got any idea of dates for your Thomas Adamson and a bit more information about him would help. Did he emigrate, who/when did he marry, die etc?

This Thomas I assume
1901
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Westmeath/Moate/Moategranoge/1775536/

Have you got Thomas going through Ellis Island?
Does he ever give Moate as his birth place?
Does he give an occupation for his father on his marriage?

There is a Christopher and Catherine having children in Moate but his occupation is shoemaker, I guess it's possible he may have had to give up shoemaking by the time of the 1901 Census.
I fairly sure all the births have the mark of the parent which would fit with Christopher and Catherine being unable to read and write in 1901. It doesn't in this case appear to be intimation on the part of the registrar as others have signed.
The birth year of the son Christopher doesn't fit age wise with 1901 but that in itself is not unusual.

Something very odd going on with Moategranoge from one census to the next
1901 lists 134 households
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Westmeath/Moate/Moategranoge/
1911 lists 5

I can see Thomas on the Saint Paul in Sept 1902 with a last residence of Moate. His name is struck through so likely he is the same Thomas on the Saxonia in Oct 1902 with a very badly damaged manifest but you can just make out the Moat of Moate.
