Hello,
I wonder whether anybody can help me. my father has been tracing his family tree. He has got to his grandfather on his father's side, George Jones, a coal miner who was born c1867. He was definitely living at 46 Butcher Row, Rhosllanerchrugog according to the 1901 census. his wife was Mary Jones, formally Thomas (her father was David Thomas, widowed, living with them b circa 1841)
We are now stuck in trying to find out any more about George Jones including when and where he was born. We thought he was born in Rhos but may have been born near Oswestry, Shropshire in a place called Sweeney Mountain.
can anyone help?

I have had some kind help and now know that George Jones married Mary Elizabeth Thomas in 1895. This would probably have taken place in either Shropshire or Denbighshire. If we got a copy of the marriage certificate I would imagine that it may give us a lead as to where they lived prior to 1901 because there is no sign of them in Butcher Row in 1891.
Any idea how I do this?
Thanks

Thanks v much gadget, I have ordered it. No idea how I locked the topic but it seems ok now - new to this in case you hadn't guessed!

Hi Sian :)
It's easy to do - I think you accidentally clicked on the little lock/unlock icon beneath this posting. A very kind Mod unlocked it.
It appears that George was born Rhos from the census info. I'll see if I can find more out but, as you are aware, looking for a Jones in Rhos is not easy :-X
I'll report back if I find anything.
The marriage cert will give his father's name so that will help.

Hi Paul :)
(Don't ask what the time is - got a lurgy and can't breev :'( )
Just checked and the marriage was a civil one in Wrexham, so not good for your searches.
If you are kind enough, it might be worth searching in Rhos for a George , 1865 ish; Daniel, 1868 ish; and a Mary, 1870 ish - Mother - Ann (e)

Sian - having seen the additional info that you sent, I think that this is more likely than the Sweeney one as George is consistent with his place of birth as Rhos.

I just don't see Ann and/or Margaret before 1871 :-\

Thanks all,
I'll have a chat with Dad tomorrow. Looks highly likely that the family didn't stray over the border! Can anyone explain the fluctuation in ages?

Hello Gadget :) I couldn't see baptisms for Margaret, George, Daniel or Mary in Rhos :(
I hope your lurgy's getting better :-*
Paul.

It was very kind of you to look, Paul, I suspected something like that though :-\
Sian - census ages can vary considerably - George is down as born circa 1865-67 on all the censuses and is consistent in his place of birth.
I think that we now have to wait for the marriage cert. Do report back when you get it as we might be able to take you back further.

Possible birth registrations for Daniel Jones -

I'm still trying to filter out the George certs - there are a few!

I bet, not the most unusual name :P

Sian ~
As far as you are aware, did he have any other names. Looking at the Welsh BMD, we have two or three just George and others with George <second name>. I'd really like to cross them off :-\
I suppose the marriage cert will arrive soon though :)

Just George, I think he would have been known by two names otherwise as the rest of us are
thanks again

Any luck? By the way, would be more likely that they would have been christened rather than baptised. Still waiting for the marriage certificate. Hope I've ordered the right one when it comes! :)

Hi Sian
Just wondering about your distinction between baptism and christening. I use the term 'baptism' for any of the ceremonies that involve the introduction and naming of a new member of a Chtistian Church. Maybe it's because I was C of E and baptism was what we called the ceremony

In that case, it would be a baptism by your definition.
Thanks again- let's hope the marriage certificate brings some joy!
