Audrey, thanks for that, unfortunately it is no connection to my Michael, my one was married to a Mary who was also born in C1841 (but in Kilkenny), they had children with names like Cornelious, Catherine, Michael and Thomas Francis.

hi Michael- just stumbled upon your posting. I have a Michael Shanahan who married a Catherine Maher. Also married to Margaret Hackett. Probably not a connection but thought I'd post anyway. I don't have any information on Catherine other than she died (and a child too) when they were on board a ship going to Australia in 1852. Michael and Catherine were married in Borrisoleigh, Tipperary, Ireland in 1838. Judy in Maryland

Have no idea if there is a connection...  My grandfather was William Joseph Maher (1863-1945) from ? Ireland.  Family stories say his parents were Michael and Mary Maher and I hold a portrait of them because my name is Michael.  This has been a brick wall since I started genealogy.  William married Catherine McShane from Loughross/Crossmagen, County Armagh, in Sep 1891 in Omaha, Nebraska.  Her ancestors I have been able to trace but ol' William is a mystery.  Any leads will be appreciated.

Civil registration of births in Ireland did not begin until 1864 so there will be no birth certificate. To find church baptismal records you need to know the religion and where the family lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county).
