Title: INDIA - WATLING, Cedric Stanley Gordon
Post by: lunasidhe on Friday 17 September 10 02:19 BST (UK)
Looking for any information on my grandfather, Cedric Stanley Gordon Watling, born in Penang Strait Settlements in the Malaya States, Jan 10, 1895.  Immagrated to Canada in the 1920's, and resided in Montreal, then Limalu(?spelling) Quebec, and finally moved to Kapuskasing Ontario around 1928 or 1929.

His father was Reverand Gilbert Watling (born in 1863, died Lancaster 1942), and his mother was Mabel Potter.  He remarried, after which Cedric and his brother Monty were sent to live with the grandparents in India.

His grandfather died in 1889 in Mussorie India, and grandmother died in 1920 in Delhi India.  We have no names for them.

Found quite a bit on his father Gilbert:

Gilbert Shuldham Watling born Calcutta 11 August 1863. Parents Robert Gordon Watling and Selina Elizabeth. There is a tree on Ancestry which identifies his mother as Selina Elizabeth Palmer.

Per Crockfords he was ordained in Calcutta in 1888. Chaplain of Penang 1889-91, briefly in Manchester 1891-2 then back to India in various appointments before coming to England in 1898.

He's in the 1901 census with 2nd wife Frances and son Cyril at Gravesend. He died 21 November 1941 at Alcester, Warwickshire

CPO Electrician Cedric Stanley Watling mentioned in despatches 1945

"Chief Petty Officer Watling has had considerable sea time assisting Bangor Minesweepers in calibrating sweeps and other adjustments. He also assisted greatly during enemy mine clearance off St. John's during 1943. He is most reliable and has worked many extra hours in order to place ships in serviceable condition for emergency operation."

Wow, this is amazing, less than a day and I am so much farther ahead in finding out where my family comes from.  Thank you all for the information, it will take me a few days to sort through it all and get the dates/names in some semblance of order.  I hope to be able to trace things back farther, the data base on the Watlings is amazing!!   ;D

Hope to be able to update some of the information with the family history that I know.
