Title: Mistranscription?
Post by: liverpool lass on Thursday 16 September 10 22:11 BST (UK)
I am looking for the birth details of the children of Kenneth McKenzie and Sarah Scott in Massachusetts. I  have found info on Family Search for all bar one -

Annie McKenzie b c1892 possibly Rhode Island

The closest I could find was;
Annie McKinzy20/10/1892  parents Kenneth McKinzy and Clara Scott in Johnstone, Rhode Island.

There is no image for me to see unfortunately. Could it have been mistranscribed? Does anyone have access to this image by any chance?

Hi lass..
According to the 1900 US census
Firtchburg, Ward 2, Worcester, MA

The MCKENZIE children of Kenneth and Sarah were:
Alexander, 11, b Dec 1888, Rhode Island
Margaret, 9, b Dec 1890, Rhode Island
Annie, 7, b Oct 1892/3 (very faint), Rhode Island
Kenneth, 5, b Jan 1895, Rhode Island
Sadie, 3, b Mar 1897, MA
Thomas, 1, b May 1899, MA

Seems to match the October date in your post.
The census was taken 2 July 1900, and Question was: (What was your) Age last birthday?

Hope this helps.
Grub

Yes,. That's the census I had. I was just wondering whether that birth ref with all the spelling mistakes could be the right one. It does seem very close.

The 1893 Johnston, RI city directory has a Kenneth McKenzie, a beamer, living at 16 North Lake.  Maybe that puts him in the right place about the right time?

Thank you. Do you know what a beamer is by any chance?

According to this - http://scotsfamily.com/occupations.htm - "A weaver's beamer drew yarn through and onto the long heavy beam of a loom."

The 1900 Census entry that grub found gives Kenneth's occupation as Beamer - Cotton Mill, so that seems to fit, too.

Ah, that makes sense! That's the background they came from in Scotland. Thanks.
