Title: Burnley, Lancashire - Parker's Arms Inn, 10/12 Croft Street
Post by: kris_baxter73 on Thursday 16 September 10 16:20 BST (UK)
Hi, I think this is the Parker's Arms Inn, 10/12 Croft Street, Burnley (closed 1958).

Can anyone confirm this?  (photo can be found here: http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/talkback/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=3594 )

This is currently in the local newspaper, it confirms it is the inn.

Thanks Cancan.  This might seem daft, but the article mentions a postcard image which does not appear.  Where the photo would normally be, I find a local furniture advertisement.  Perhaps the image is blocked because I am in Canada?  If there is an image, would it be possible to add it to this thread?
Thanks, Kris

Hi Kris,

I have just looked in the actual newspaper and it only shows Parker Lane and the buildings are the same in the photo as they are now if you use google street view.    :'(

I have been looking through all my books, postcards etc and I can`t find one single view of the old Croft Street.  I even tried the 1950s ariel view on mario maps, but it is not clear enough to pinpoint a particular building (sometimes they are).

Great photo of the Inn though!

Charles Chew was at the Parkers Arms Inn in 1901 and beyond.  It looks like they are advertising Lodgings next door on the photo.  At no.14 Croft Street there were 11 different Heads and familys living there in 1901 which may be a pointer (or not).

Regards,
Mo

Thanks Mo.

I received this message from Burnley Library.

The photograph you have of the Parker's Arms is the one in Colne.  I
have attached the image from a book from the Images of England series on
Colne, compiled by Geoff Crambie.

Under the photograph the writing says "Church Street as it looked in
1895 from the top of the parish church tower.  The two buildings on the
right are the Parkers Arms and The Fleece both built in 1665 and lost to
demolition in 1905"

In another book called "The History of Colne" by Dorothy Harrison she
says that when the inn, situated on 21 Church Street" was demolished it
was replaced by a larger inn which was later demolished by the Council
in 1938.  The Parker Arms was built for the Parkers of Alkincoats.

There was a Parkers Arms Inn in Burnley and it was similar but the Colne
one looks the better option.
