Hi Kris,

Barclay Hills was on the opposite side of Rossendale Road from Burnley Cemetery.  It is marked on some maps as Barclay Hills Coke Ovens but is on the 1848 map on www.old-maps.co.uk as Bare Clay Hills Colliery.  Type in the coordinates 382020 and 431860 and zoom in under the big U .

regards,
Mo

Fantastic!  Thank you for the super fast response and the map!  I have a feeling that Bartle Hill colliery and Barclay Hills colliery were the same.  I have two postcards that are both written on the backs by the same person, and on closer inspection, some of the men in the photos appear to be the same, even though the cards are identified on the front with the respective colliery.  The postcards are circa 1905.
Cheers, Kris

Hi,

I think you are right and they were one and the same.  I have found references to a few properties in the same locality called Bartley Hills and Higher Bartley Hills.

Regards,
Mo
who remembers the slag heap there  ;D  (I was very young!)

Thanks again, mosiefish.

I will contact Burnley library to see if they can shed some light on the subject.  I will keep you posted.

Hi, I added these photos to a youtube video.  They can be seen at 8:46 and 8:52.  You can watch the video in HD if you want to see the images in more detail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqD5KFN0Hrg

I just received this message from Burnley Library: "Barclay Hills and Bartle Hill are the same colliery."
