There's a WWI Draft registration card for a James GARNET born Aug.1886 Penobscot (county?), Maine.
Do you know where your father was living in 1920 and 1930?

There's a James Garnet in 1920 Census living in N.Y. with his wife Phillis. The actual census entry may give more clues.

I have all that info on him from when he arrived in London England 2/16/1917  and resided at 23 canonbury rd.Islington as a lodger before he met phyllis Turner his wife. it is from Jan 1917  back to 1886 that is void of info. I do know that he worked as a motor ingineer for Gaston Williams & Wigmore Ltd of Montreal Canada . He registered for the draft in Maine but there is no proof he actusly lived there. Thanks for all your info glad that I signed on to RootsChat.

We really do need to know all the information you've already found so that we can help you find more details about the 'missing' years (1886-1917).
What is his address on the draft registration card?

The 1920 & 1930 Census, the California Death Index, and the WWI & WWII Draft Registration Card all say he was born in Maine, and both draft registration cards say it was Bangor, Maine.  Also, in a database about members of the military from Maine, it says he was born in and resided in Bangor.  So, seems likely he lived in Maine at some point.

The WWI draft registration card lists an Islington address and an employer in London.

Do you know his religious affiliation, and does his marriage in England have any mention of his father's name?

If he was working in Montreal, you might expect him to turn up here:
http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/
But no trace circa 1916/7, (actually no "Garnet", just "Garnett", but no James), although he could have been working for Gaston Williams & Wigmore but not resident in Montreal. If you know an address in Montreal where he might have lived/work you can check that directly. I didn't check earlier years so perhaps there were relatives in the area.

Information on genealogy sources in Bangor:
http://www.bpl.lib.me.us/reference/BangPeo.htm
and holdings at the Maine Historical Society:
http://www.mainehistory.org/library_holdings.shtml

The state of Maine did not require birth certificates until 1892.

thanks again for your input.  as per may last reply#6 you state the need for additional info.  well, there isn't much before 1917 but will give you what i picked up as a youth from 1930 to 1966.  my dad hardly spoke of his past except to my mom of whoom i got alot of my info.  keepingin mind my age and non  interest to what was happening.  first of the family's was told (my 3 older brother and i) that dad was an orphan and he ran away fro what orphanage, and to where was never established nor was the fact that he might have bee adopted and if his real name was even james garnet.  there were whispers among us that he may have been a home child and taken in by a garnet family.  possible sea captain as a cabin boy.  he knew sailing ships and rigging from stem to stern, keal to mainmast.  also he knew the whole seacoast from n.y. to halifax, n.s.  not just bangor me.   to answer the religion question, he never practiced nor spoke of a religious connection.  in spelling the mane garnet, he would correct everyone.  and corrected documents with two t's back to one t.  gaston williams & wigmore has offices in london, montreal, n.y. and calif.  the office in london was 1A waterloo terrace, islington and my dad was a boarder at 23 canonbury rd., islington as a lodger.  just a few blocks from gaston williams.  incase i neglected to mention,my dad was employed by gaston williams as a motor engineer which indicates good education.
there seems to be no way to connect james garnet to any family person or place prior to 1917 as to any proof that he was a resident in maine, canada, or england.  thanks again, dick

Dick, do you have the marriage certificate from the UK or not? He might not be truthful about his father's name on it, or might not give one (maybe the name of an adoptive parent instead), but it would be helpful.

 - see "To obtain passport applications through an online request".  Since we've not got anywhere with any other records you probably have to go back to looking for the passport.

Yes I have the marrage license in front of me , and yes it has his fathers name as John Garnet deceased. that's all, I have searched the John G s but as in the past cant find a thread that would connect them beyond a shadow of a doubt or even a ma by, In another I D booklet they ask for his parents name he stated it was John and where it asked for his mothers name he entered Don't know. I am going to try and follow a backward path from when he was living in london before his marrage to my mom in March 1919. I will keep you posted    Dick    U.S.A

To clarify the information on the WWI draft registration card
It shows a birth of Aug 29, 1886 at Bangor, (Penobscot County), Maine.
He is single, employed as a motorman/driver for Gaston Williams J. Wigmore out of London.
His address was 8 Waterloo Ice(?), Islington N. and the form states that he was a natural born citizen of the United States.
The draft form was filled out through the U.S. Consul in London, England and dated Aug 25, 1917 and the notation that he had no address in the U.S.

This seems to be your father.  Why are you skeptical that he was actually born in the U.S.?
Have you tried to find a John Garnet (grandfather) on the 1880 US census?

Debbie

 Debbie ::
In your last most welcome replie you asked me several questions, So I will try to cover them all as well as some additional tidbits that may not even matter or apply but I feel it will help paint more of a picture of my Dad. First off there are  a couple of forms such as his ww 1 draft registration and his I D booklet he filled out when he arrived in England in 1917. I dont have a copy of the draft card however the information is close if not the same as his I D booklet. It may be possable for me to send a photo copy to you on some of the info I have , That is as soon as I get a better handle on how to navagate Rootschat systum. Its 10 pages long. They asked his fathers name  John Garnet  Nationality [American]and under that line they asked [if aquired another nationality give particulars] he enters St Louis Missouri. Below they asked the same for his mothers maiden name He entered not known then he lined through that and enters Nora  american [aquired another nationality] born Sedalia Missouri, I searched for them in MO but no luck. I have in front of me the original marrage license of James and Phillis dtd 1 mar 1919 #177632.  Two months after their wedding they boarded the S S  Aquitania. Dad as a U S soldier and mom as a war bride docking at Ellis Island Mar 30 1919.  Also in front of me I have a copy of form 545 prepared by the veterans administration using information supplied by my dad James Garnet. This form is dated 1938 not 1919 when he was discharged. He was discharged at camp Devins Mass Nov 21 1919. As per his seperation papers he filled out his Draft Card at the American council London England not Bangor Maine so he could have bin from Timbuck Two or eny wher else so the consulet would send it to the state he chose Maine. Remember he stated on several forms he had no postal address in the U.S  Hay this is enough for now I have other info that will help  LATER  Thanks fror listening

I imagine you've followed this John Garnet through the censuses, in Washington, Maine? There in 1880 where he is a SAILOR and he and his wife are from New Brunswick
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_5024102
a labourer in 1870 Washington, Maine https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11665-70505-3?cc=1438024
also there is 1860...
and 1850 as John H. Garnet with father Josiah and mother Isabelle &siblings  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M6VC-SSN

I can't see John or Matilda on any U.S. census after that... so did they move back to Canada...or are the parents already deceased?
next reply
Josiah ( now says born Maine) and Isabelle in 1881 with son Aaron ( Seaman ) http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Census/household_record.asp?HOUSEHOLD_CODE=1880US_5023443

Isabelle's last name was Mitchel  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FDJB-LQD

Maybe a red herring, but following that lead...
A John H Garnet with those parents married Lydia G. Johnson in Lawrence, Massachusetts  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4MD-4K9
Since Effie born around then, is this another name used by Matilda?
Oddly there is a birth for Aaron https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F4SH-WP8

Adding: Birth for Linnie says mother Matilda J. Hatt  ?? so perhaps Lydia died in childbirth with Effie/Abbie
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWBT-6JV
No here is marriage 1867 for Mattie Hatt and John "F" Garnett
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F48G-T8H

adding...frustrating when I did the search for Matilda earlier it came up blank, but here she is showing up on 2 more census he now as John T. Garnett a SEA CAPTAIN
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MMGQ-LWQ
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MR32-N1C
1930 she is Almida https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XMD6-V4K

Still these seem likely suspects for parents...without the 1890 hard to know if he was part of this household...running away to the sea at an early age...

the one son's descendants don't trace him back..probably confused my jumble as above
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jamesdm49&id=I087424

Could look here for more on John to see who parents are
