Title: BAWDEN South Australia
Post by: JAS1 on Tuesday 14 September 10 05:08 BST (UK)
This is the first topic I have initiated on Rootschat, and I have been searching unsuccessfully for the answers for years.

1.  I am seeking the arrival date (and name of ship) when my great-great-grandparents arrived in South Australia.  Henry and Josepha Bawden (nee Matthews) arrived in South Australia with two sons, John Hugh and Samuel, some time between the birth of Samuel in England in March 1855, and the birth of their first Australia child Mary Emma near Kapunda in December 1858.  I have searched many shipping records but to no avail!

2.  I am also seeking the date/place of death and burial place of my great-great-grandmother, Josepha Bawden.  The family lived near Moonta (her last child was born there in August 1868) and they later possibly moved to the Port Adelaide area.  Her husband Henry died in at Glanville in 1909, and I was told she had predeceased him, but this may not be so.  I have searched for her death under Bowden and also Joseph but can find nothing.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks Gerry; I hadn't followed up those references in the SA Directories.  Maybe Josepha died at Wallaroo?

Yes, Indeed.  It might help to paint a picture of the movements of family members.  Were there any directories in the 1890's and early 1900's?

Thanks again,

John

You probably have these marriage details, it maybe your Henry & Josepha.

Free UK BMD Records

Marriage in Jun 1852 Henry Bawden District of Liskead Vol 5c Page 109

Marriage in Jun 1852 Josepha Matthews District of Liskead Vol 5c Page 109

District of Liskead is in Cornwall.

Thanks again, Gerry, but I do have this record, and have largely tracked the Matthews and Bawdens through the UK census records etc.

It is once they land in Australia that things get difficult!

John, did some of their children move to Victoria?

I can see some BDM's of Bawden's that were born Mootna SA & married Victoria also children being born & given the name of 'Josepha'  :D

Thank you, LoganH, this is certainly the family and showed where they lived.  I understand Josepha to be the last born, but what happened to Josepha (the mother) after this?

Merlin - yes, one son Frederick Henry moved to Victoria (had a daughter Josepha Eliza); also their grandson, my grandfather Henry (had a daughter Katherine Josepha).

Thanks for all this,

John

The death notice of Henry BAWDEN in 1909 does not mention Josepha only the children so one would assume she was deceased.

Thanks, Cando - I have been told she predeceased her husband Henry which would fit in with the assumption one would make from this notice.  Therefore Josepha must have died between the birth of her last child in 1868 and 1909.  I have no reason to believe she ever left SA, so where and when did she die?  It is very frustrating!

I have just had a thought!  I wonder if Josepha Bawden died under circumstances which necessitated an inquest?  Does anyone know of an index of inquests in South Australia for the period 1868 -1909?  Perhaps I should make this a separate post?

John I there are many bdm records missing in SA.  There is a book on the topic and have been meaning to chase it up.

Graham Jaunay has written about it in one of his newsletters.
http://www.jaunay.com/newsletter/newsletter30.html

There were many opportunities for events to be not registered or the registration to be lost in the chain of reporting.
and
....the published BDM Indexes for SA record the references produced by the Principal Registrar and these do not relate to the District Records. Not all District records are indexed....
Some of the problems you may encounter include: .........

I had already searched Inquests 1880-1942...no Josephine BAWDEN.  I have also searched other resources as well Coroner's Reports, Deaths in Mental Institutions...nothing.

Cando

Edit to remove some of the quoted info....

Thank you for your efforts, Cando.  It is looking more and more like a fruitless search.  Obviously you would suggest other possible avenues to search if you knew of them!

The publication is out of print....however this won't help you find your Josepha.

South Australian Registration Districts of Births, Deaths and Marriages
South Australian Registration Districts of BD&M
Media: BOOK - paperback, 166 pages
Author: B. Schahinger
Year: 1998
Other Data: maps, bibliog, indexes
ISBN: 0947280340

If Josepha died at Wallaroo/Moonta/Kadina her burial record would be listed here

Hi, not sure how old this thread is (perhaps VERY old if the ‘10’ at end of date is 2010!), but I found this thread and wanted to say that I am a granddaughter of Josepha Eliza Harris (nee Bawden), daughter of Henry Bawden, late of Newport, Vic.
Happy fill in any gaps re this branch of the family!
