Title: migrant to USA mystery
Post by: south shields on Sunday 12 September 10 22:01 BST (UK)
My grandfather spent some time in the United States. He is on English census in 1891, but not on 1901. He married my grandmother in England in 1906....and remained in England for rest of his life. His name was Jacob Tate Foster dob 1876. He came from the Newcastle upon tyne area. I have found a passenger J Foster on a boat going from Liverpool to New York on in 1891 but that was before the census date so do not think it was him as he was with his family on census. He was a coalminer/engineer and apparently talked about mountains of coal and haematite when he came home. Stayed with family in Ohio or Pittsburgh??? Anyone that can help out there? Many thanks.

The 1898-99 Wheeling, West Virginia city directory has a William Tate, engineer for The E.C. Flaccus Co., who resided in Bridgeport, Ohio (which is apparently right across the river from Wheeling.)  So that seems to fit with the information on Ohio.  Pittsburgh is probably the closest large city to that area.

I found an Ohio death certificate for a William Tate, a stationary engineer, born England and died in Bridgeport, Ohio here - http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start
