The 1901 census alone has 1,648 entries for that surname in London and you haven't mentioned any christian names so without more detailed information we have no way of determining the right entry

We need full names and birthyears (but not of any living persons)

If any were born and still alive  pre-1911 - you can look them up on the 1911 census at  http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx  which is a paysite

Births/Marriages and Deaths can be looked up on www.freebmd.org.uk

If any were born pre-1881 - the 1881 census is free at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

The IGI is a good source for baptisms/christenings and is also free at http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Hi Sarah

As Carole says difficult to help without more information. I think you may have more than you realise.

So was she Bessie Hoare born 1906? If so you should be able to find her birth in Freebmd. Her marriage certificate probably gives her father's name and occupation, so you can look for him in the 1911 and 1901 and gradually trace him back in censuses until you find him with his parents. If you can then find their marriage that takes you back another generation.

It might be worth you contacting John Hoare, his branch of the Hoare family used to live in Deptford.

His Great Grandfather Edward Hoare used to be the landlord of the Railway Tavern in Deptford 1870’s to 1880’s. That pub was knocked down in the 1970’s.

It might just be geographic coincidence that two separate families named Hoare lived in Deptford or there may be a connection.

John has put a lot of work in and we both trace our Hoare ancestors back to the village of Chiddingstone in Kent around 1750.

He maintains a website with a section on Hoare genealogy here.

Here's the marriage from Freebmd

June quarter 1894  Poplar  1C 821

Joseph Hoare
Eliza Jane Mitchell

If you send for that it will give you both their fathers' names and you should be able to work back from there. If you get stuck just ask.

Good luck

The marriage was on 14 May 1894 at All Saints, Poplar. The fathers were Alfred Hoare (D), linguist and James Mitchell, stevadore. Joseph is indicated as being aged 27, a Sergeant in the 2nd Middlesex, at Hounslow, at the time. Eliza Jane was aged 18.

Hi, just seen your notes about your grandmother Bessie and I am the granddaughter of her sister Elizabeth.  I have a list of all the children and most of their dates of birth.  There were 12 children in total but only 9 survived.  I remember visiting your grandmother in New Cross with my Nan and also visited her when she moved to Gravesend.  Pauline

Well, I remember your Dad and is your Mum's name Marion?  I think they lived in Meopham.  Has your Dad given you much information?  Anything I can help you with let me know.  All of the brothers and sisters in the Hoare family are now no longer with us and even some of their children.   Do you have a brother?  My Mum and Dad's names were Jack & Violet and I also have a brother John.  Violet was Elizabeth's daughter.  x

Hi Sarah

As I came upon this website by accident not sure how to get into your tree.  However, I have all the info on brothers and sisters but would like to know more about Joseph and Eliza Hoare.  I know that Joseph was a Regimental Sergeant Major and, I think, an only child.  I do not know how many siblings Eliza had. As regards your uncle I am afraid I do not remember him at all.  You mum most probably will remember my brother more than me as they are nearer in age, I will be 65 this year.  So sorry to hear about your Dad - he was young when he died and that seemed to happen to a lot of the Hoare family.  Pauline

Sarah - I think you should remove your phone number as this can be seen by anyone on the web and you are liable to be bombarded by all sorts of people.

Hi Sarah

You phone number was removed so that was more sensible.  I keep in contact with Winifred, albeit only now and again, and I will look on ancestry to see what I can find.  I am on there also.  Any info I can give you let me know. Pauline
