Hi,
I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to help knock down my brick wall. Louis Hoeck came to Britain from Germany in 1852. In 1861 he was living in Paisley In Renfrewshire with wife Mary although I don't know where they married or her surname. Their son Ebenezer T Hoeck (b.1866 Paisley) was married to an ancestor of mine, Caroline Spencer but I can find no details about the marriage and at the moment Caroline is a bit of a puzzle, if I knew where she was born and in what year I would have a pretty good chance of tracking her down.
Ebenezer was a painter and engraver and I believe he lived in Glasgow from 1885 - 1928.
Thank you. ???

Hi,
I know this is not what you are looking for but Louis George seems went to the US and died 15 Dec 1952 at Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, United States aged 89 years.
I can not find a marriage for Ebenezer & Caroline yet or find them on any census after 1881.

Hi Sharon,
Thanks very much, that's amazing, I can't believe I got an answer so quickly. The only thing now is to try and find Ebenezer and Caroline. I did find an Ebenezer that was a landscape painter and engraver and I'm hoping that is him but I'm a bit puzzled as to why I can't find him and Caroline at all unless of course the enumarator made up his own spelling of the name!!

I can not find a marriage for them in Scotland or Ebenezer on any census after 1881. He seems to disapear.

Good info Sharon :) Strange that even though there is an OPR entry for Louis' birth in 1829, his 1881 census entry shows him as born in Prussia?
Louis Hoeck 52, Lately Teacher Of Music (Retired) b. British Subject, New Ruppin Prussia
Mary Hoeck 47
Mary Dott Hoeck 25
William Thomson Hoeck 21
Louise Hoeck 19
Louis George Hoeck 17
Ebenezer Thomson Hoeck 15
Brodie Smith Scott 28
Elizabeth Reid 25,servant
Address: 86 High St, Paisley High Church
There is this reference to Louis Hoeck from 1884 www.grianpress.com/Tannahill/TANNAHILL'S SONGS 2.htm

Monica I noticed that myself but there is a record that tied in with everything so who knows, maybe there are two of them.

One way perhaps on checking on Ebenezer's wife's details if this entry is correct www.whistler.arts.gla.ac.uk/correspondence/biog/display/?bid=Hoec_ET is to check to see whether there is a death entry for him on Scotlands People. If so this would include his wife's name, if married.
Monica
Added: There is a death showing on SP in 1932 for an Ebenezer Hoeck b. 1865 which matches with the info on the link above (perhaps died late 1931 and death not registered until begining of 1932) and with the birth year that Sharon has found.
-
Ok have found him in 1891 mistranscribed as Hocek. He is living with his mother and brothers william & Louis. There is also a Catherine King with them a servant. They are living at 27 Cumberland St West, Kelvin Glasgow Barony.
His occupation is down as painter artist.
So he married after 1891 and he is not with his mother in 1901.

There is a likely marriage for Ebenezer in 1893 to a Caroline (not Spencer, checked for that) in Renfrewshire.
Monica
-
My link to an 1884 reference for Louis, father, is way off :P There are a number of Will & Testament entries showing for him on SP which give death details as: TEACHER OF MUSIC, PAISLEY, D. 14/04/1881 AT PAISLEY (census that year on the 3 April).
A Caroline Hoeck died in 1940, b. 1863, not sure where in Scotland though, from the general searches.
Monica

Monica just checked that one too.
Jidian where did you get your original info from?
Sharon

Ebenezer married Caroline S Allgood in 1893, caroline's mothers maiden name was Anne ? Spencer. The marriage confirms Ebenezer's parents.
Sharon
-
Well done Sharon :D So there is a Spencer connection somewhere but the Spencer name perhaps not where it should be. I cannot see anything more on Ebenezer and wife Caroline. Nothing on the 1901 Scottish census. There are two Eb* Ho*ck showing in his age range but not the right ones on SP for 1901. Checked newspapers/books etc. and nothing of note.

I also checked 1901 for England, they are not there so maybe they left the country for a while but can not see them on incoming passenger lists.
Just a little info on the Hoeck side.
Theodor also left and went to the US and returned in 1900 with a Mrs. Hoeck.

I am wondering whether this is Caroline's parents' marriage:
Marriages 3rd Qrt 1859 www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Thomas Matthew Allgood and Marth Ann Spencer - Northwich: 8a/ 338
Possible 1871 entry in Worcester - RG10; Piece: 3049; Folio: 87; Page: 24:
Thomas M Allgood 62, letter press printer
Martha A Allgood 42, governess
Caroline S Allgood 7
Emily M Allgood 2
Emily F Andrews 19
Frederick Lamb 10
Sharon, what was Caroline's father's name from her marriage entry? Would the above entry fit?
Monica
-
Thats them.
Father's name is Thomas Matthew Allgood.
I had found a Caroline Allgood born 1854 Worcestershire working as a governess in Brixton London for the Seton family in 1891. So that must have been her.
But where do they go after that ???
-
Let's wait and see whether any of these new details on Caroline fit with what jidian was expecting! Like you though, curious as to where Ebenezer and Caroline were for 1901!
Monica
-
I agree. Looking forward to Jidian's answer.

Hello Everyone,
I'm absolutely floored, not only have you broken down my brick wall I now know what happened to Caroline. Caroline Spencer Allgood was the daughter of Martha Ann Spencer (daughter of my G G Grandfather by his first wife) and Thomas Mathew Allgood.
I came across Ebenezer Hoeck via the Wills and Administrations publication when I found the details for my g.aunt, Caroline Spencer she was the daughter of Martha's half brother Richard Spencer (my g.grandfather).
It was the odd thing about her Will that prompted me to want to know more, Caroline Spencer died in 1915 and her father Richard probated the Will the same year then in 1923 it says that Caroline Spencer wife of Ebenezer Thomson Hoeck probated her Will. I'd never heard of a Will being probated twice and still don't quite understand how that could be but I'm very grateful for all the information and so pleased to have found Caroline.
Thanks once again.

Hi Sharon,
I forgot to say in my last posting that if you think I can help you in any way please let me know and once again thanks.

In case it interests anyone, I've just acquired two rather nice watercolours by Ebenezer Thomson Hoeck.
They're of Siena in Italy, dated 1894 and clearly painted on location. Perhaps on his and Caroline's honeymoon? I attach a small detail of one of them.

He seems to have lived in Bruges for a while too, so maybe that's where they were in 1901. I'd guess that the 1st World War perhaps drove them back to Scotland?
Mark.

Hi Mark,
Brilliant, thanks very much for that. I've been quite puzzled about where Ebezener and Caroline had got to and it's great to see some of his work.
I did try to copy and paste the picture to put in a book that I am writing for my twin nephews about their family, but it didn't quite work. Never mind at least the information is fascinating.
