Title: Help with James Gorst

Looking for James Gorst, recorded on his arrest papers in 1821 as a carpenter aged 18 from Stratford, West Ham, London, . Ended up in Tasmania, Australia.

 I have his history from then. 

 Any help will be greatly appreciated.

West Ham was officially in Essex until 1965 when it joined Greater London incoporated into the London borough of Newham. In the second half of the C19th the urban growth of London and West Ham meant the two were increasingly connected by a continuous urban development but in 1819 this would not have been the case.

A James Gorst was sentenced to 7 years transportation for larcency at Essex county assizes in 1821. There doesn't seem to be anyone sentenced in London/Middlesex around that time with that name. Do you know where your James Gorst was sentenced?

The James Gorst convicted in 1821 was aged 18

It looks like he was transported 1821/1822 to Tasmanian

When and where did your James Gorst marry and die. Do the Australian certificates give more details of his parents?

My ex-husband is a direct descendant of James Gorst, Convict in Tasmania. My daughter and I have traced the Gorst family in Australia but can't get back any further. We know he was born in Cheshire but tried at the Essex Assizes. We have no idea who his parents were. Would love to exchange information with you.

Hi all,
I am also a direct descendent of James Gorst, still residing in Launceston.
Would like to share family stories, however also have not traced James any further back.
Am also not sure if his wife Martha Gibson was the free settler that arrived on "The Brankenmoor" from London.

I found a James Gorst aged 4 weeks baptized at All Saints West Ham 10 July 1803 son of Richard and Sarah
