Title: Lookup request for John WESTCOTT 1841 marriage in Milverton
Post by: Almaha on Friday 10 September 10 17:37 BST (UK)
I would really appreciate some help with this marriage if anyone can help me.  I have searched for years for the marriage of a John Westcott (father Jasper, mother Elizabeth Spear) who was born in Dawlish in  1816.  He was married to Elizabeth ????? who was born in Milverton around 1823.

The marriage is shown on the FamilySearch I.G.I. records as being in Milverton in 1841 but I cannot seem to find it and have no idea of Elizabeth's maiden name.  So of course I can't trace the tree any further back.

I did find some marriages transcriptions for St Michael's church in Milverton on line but the couple were not shown on these pages.

If anyone can help it would be brilliant!  Thanks.

Hi,

Unfortunately the marriage that you found on the IGI is one that has been "submitted" by an LDS member, so not taken from a parish register.   The date shown as "about 1841" would suggest that it is guesswork.

Did the couple have any children?   If so you could look for a birth registration and the copy of the certificate will show Elizabeth's maiden name.  Using that you can then hunt for the marriage.

There were several children of the marriage - I think my great grandmother Fanny Westcott was the first.  (I never ever found her marriage either - so maybe she didn't ever get married).

Over the years the name Calloway (or Callaway or other derivatives) have been mentioned and my poor old mum before she died at 92 certainly remembered that name.  However whenever I have searched for an Elizabeth Calloway (or other spellings) nothing has come up on Ancestry or findmypast.

The children were supposed to have been born in Dawlish so I guess they would come under the Newton Abbot registration district but usually when you search for births on places such as Findmypast they only show a birth and not the names of the parents.

Many years ago I contacted Newton Abbot registrars but they had no record of a Fanny Westcott.  Should I perhaps be searching for her birth on the Devonshire lookup site to try and narrow it down?

Hi,

Baptisms show the names of the parents but the birth registration index just gives basic details; very much later the mother's maiden name is listed.

Have you looked on FreeBMD for any possible birth registrations?
