Title: Griffith Valuation
Post by: KATE1001 on Thursday 09 September 10 10:00 BST (UK)
I have a print-out of the Griffith Valuation for the village in Mayo where my father was from.  A lot of the families had the same surname.  In the column where it states occupier it gives a name e.g. Thomas Tarpy then in brackets after it, it has the name Dominick.  I would be grateful if someone could explain what the second name means.

The name in brackets would be a nickname for that person (check the rest of the townland for other people named Tarpy to see if they also have anything after their name). Keep these nicknames in mind when searching other records as it's a further way of identifying the correct family.

Added- had a look at Griffith's page (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&Submit.x=23&Submit.y=18&Submit=Submit&familyname=tarpy&firstname=thomas&baronyname=&countyname=MAYO&unionname=&parishname=) and as I suspected there are lots of Tarpys.

Hi Aghadowey

Thank-you for your explanation of what the second name meant

I believe that sometimes, if there was more than one person with a particular name, that they added their father's name to distinguish between them. So it could be possible that your Thomas Tarpey's father was Dominick  :-\

I believe this is the proper explanation
