Title: IFHF
Post by: sarenid on Wednesday 08 September 10 10:47 BST (UK)
Does anyone know what has happened to the search on the IFHF site whenever I click to search the records in my case Donegal it comes up with "This Account Has Been Suspended".  I was only using it last week to check on baptism, marriage records etc and it was working fine.

The Co. Londonderry index here have gone- could it be connected?
"Central Signposting Index removed. The Central Signposting Index which was on this website has now been removed. The data which was on this part of the website can now be accessed via the website of the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) www.rootsireland.ie. Please note that a charge is levied for each individual search on this website. "

Thanks aghadowey - that link worked fine and my password etc so I shall now . to my favourites.  Appreciate that there is a charge for the search but you can go a considerable distance using the free index if you have are willing to time-consumingly go through each parish.  I have managed to find a surpising number of baptisms albeit only year by doing this and saving myself the 5 Euros.  Many thanks again

I havn't used Donegal records but have checked some other counties on the system that I've used and they are working ok (Wicklow & Cavan).

The IFHF can suspend your  account if you overuse the free index search without actually buying any records. I would think they would send you an email if this was the case..

Thanks for that Shane - I have to admit to not being too willing to pay if I can avoid it - only as I never signed in how would they know it was me.  However, the link aghadowey gave me now appears to be working so I shall perhaps tread more warily in future.

I think you have to register and sign in to do a search .. maybe your PC is remembering your details and logging you in each time, without you noticing ?

Hi,
People who go through the parishes to determine whether the record is the one they want are only narrowing down the search .  They would still have to pay for the full details.  This seems perfectly good practice.

If people did not do that, then IFHF could be charging them for records that have been free for ages, such as the civil records that are in the IGI.  I was very excited when I thought I had found my ancestor, but when I narrowed the search a little more it was clear it was the same old civil records I have been looking at for 20 years.

I am really hoping the RC parish records I need might come on line soon (if they exist) and I will be glad to pay my €5 for that!

I understood that when FindMyPast started showing the 1881 census data from LDS, there was a condition that they weren't allowed to charge for it (someone please correct me if I am wrong).  It would be good if the same applied to civil records!
