Title: Ennerdale, Cumbria and REED family
Post by: elsie ellen on Tuesday 07 September 10 16:40 BST (UK)
Hi all!  :)

I have been trying to trace this family for some time so far with no success through the censuses, so I thought I'd try a new track with this newer - to me- possibility.

Henry REED was christened 2 Aug 1839, Ennerdale, Cumbria. His parents are James REED and Ann ? as noted on the IGI Family Search. On his death certificate his parents are said to be James REED and Ann GRAHAM.

According to the family bible Henry was born 14th June 1839. (I have just learnt of this bible's existance, so a new source of information for me).

Given his birth date is in June of 1839 and the christening is in August of the same year, it is highly probable that I might finally have found my Henry.

Is it possible to verify the surname of his mother? Are there records somewhere that might be of help in this search, and perhaps even some might identify siblings?

Another snippet of information that might be helpful: on Henry's wedding certificate his father's occupation is cited as a mining manager.

Hi Elsie

Had a quick look on the IGI and a James Reed married Ann Graham on 11 September 1833 in Holy Trinity church, Whitehaven.  As Ennerdale is only 8 miles away, this may be the right one!!

Hi

There is a birth registered for a Henry Reed in the Sept qtr of 1839 at Whitehaven, at:

Henry Reed   Whitehaven   25  127

If this is him his mothers maiden name would be listed

Regards

Half Pint

Sharon

Checked England & Scotland census, can not locate them. Maybe they emigrated?

Good morning Lesley, Sharon and Half Pint!  :)

Thank you very much for responding to my posting last night.

Henry emigrated to Australia circa 1861, but I have been unable so far to find evidence of any other family members in Australia.

On all the certificates I have, marriage, death and the birth of children, Whitehaven is cited as his birthplace. His parents are Ann Graham and James REED. James is a mining manager.

In Whitehaven, in 1833 there is a marriage for an Ann Graham and James REED. (IGI) That James REED was not as far as I can see involved in mining but rather maritime pursuits. How else could I find out the occupation/s of James apart from Census records?

A Family Bible, believed to have been started by Henry and his wife in Victoria, Australia after their marriage, gives his birthdate as June 1839. That was why I thought the Ennerdale birth was worth following up.

Morning just found the emails from Elsie re Henry Reed.  I have been trying to solve a problem regarding a James Reed, mining manager, who is listed on the death certificate of Sarah Casson, nee Reed.  Sarah was born in Whitehaven in 1809 to James and Mary Reed.  She married John Casson and migrated to Australia in 1840.  I wonder if this could be the same family and Ann was his second wife.  Hopefully Elsie will read this.  Regards, Natalie
