My ancestors James McGee and Mary Jane McGee came from Ireland. On the 1881 census they are shown at 12 Carlisle St, Felling, Gateshead, with their sons David and Thomas. There was also a boarder called Alexander Marletts(?). Then they disappear! All except Thomas McGee, who married Ellen Jane McGowan and remained in Co Durham till his death in 1935. I have tried for over 20 years to find the whereabouts of the other McGees ( or possibly McKee as they were known) but without success. Anyone with local knowledge of Felling or maybe winning ways with the ancestry software???

Hi Dave,
Just to slightly amend your post - for people who are looking and struggling to find them in 1881, the address should read number 10 Carlisle St., Heworth. James was born in 1825 and the reference is :
RG11/5031, Folio 76, Page 17
Will continue the search now. :)

This could possibly be the death of James, doesn't help - apart from making us aware that someone of the same name and age should hopefully be in the area during 1891 and 1901.
Death, Sept qtr 1901
James McGee, aged 75
Gateshead, Vol 10a, page 634
Have you noticed there's an Alexander McGee, b. Ireland living in Heworth in 1891 ? I wondered if he was your young boarder from 1881 ?

Just found the above person, according to the 1901 census - his birth was unknown in Yorks ?
What a shame ! :(

Thanks for your help. This is a tough one. I have, over the years tried the burgess rolls at Gateshead library, the Felling historical society, some local burials and numerous other lines, all without success. It seems unlikely, at their age that the McGees would have moved or returned to Ireland. But for 4 individuals to appear no more on the records has always puzzled me. The search goes on.......:-)

I think that the David mentioned was not yours. This one was on the 1881 with parents David and Elizabeth McKee RG11/4962/41/23. It says born Co Down. I think your family might have come from Southern Ireland, possibly Co. Clare.

Hi Gadget,
I'm interested you say Co Clare. On the 1911 census my grandmother states that her husband Thomas McGee was born in Co Clare. However he could not read so would not have spotted that. I never took McGee/McKee to be any other than 'northern' names and so when I found there was a village in Armagh called 'Clare' that seemed the answer. A James McKee and Mary Jane Hamilton were married there in 1848 and had sons David and Thomas. It seemed certain that was them. They would probably have come to Gateshead in the 1870s. They appear on the 1881 census in Felling then are seen no more.
My father used to tell me, before setting off to England they'd intentionally changed their names from McKee to McGee but I don't see why. It's more likely the enumerator strugged with the accent and wrote down McGee. And in any case the searches look for all variants of spelling.
I'm grateful for any light anyone can shed on this family or any other McGees from Ireland at that time.

Hi. I am descended from James Mckee b 1825. He would be my 1st cousin 5 times removed. He was married to Mary Jane Hamilton . She had 4 brothers, George James, Joseph and Robert.
They had 9 children in 16 years - Betty Ann, Edward, Robert, James, Mary Jane, Nancy, William, David and Thomas. Whilst I’ve been working on other aspects of my tree I’ll have look at these ones.
They were born in different town lands in County Armagh, ballyshiels, ballymore, corlust, mavemacullen and Markethill. All really within walking distance.
Mary Jane Hamilton’s father was b 1799 in ballyshiel and died 1873, corlust. He was married to Mary Hamilton b 1795 and died 1875 corlust, Co Armagh.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Lorna for getting in touch. James (b.1825) also had a brother called Robert and one of his descendants in Australia (John McKee (( he won't mind me referring to him)) ) has done a huge amount of work on the McKee side.
Unfortunately the whereabouts of James McKee/Mary Jane Hamilton after 1881 is a mystery to me. Perhaps, as you research their children it will become clear which remained in Northern Ireland and perhaps provided a home for their parents in old age.
