Hi all
Looking for John and James Black, born circa 1870, departed from Ireland to USA or Canada (departure and arrival port unknown), and from whom nothing has been heard since! One letter was received early 1900s but no record of same is kept. Father - Randal H Black, Mother - Mary Berry.
Any help would be great, thanks.
Matt

Brilliant! That's the one. Thanks so much. I'll have a dig about and then come back with queries - will read up on those guides in your reply.

Ok, so looks like Ontario, Canada, not USA - so now looking for John Black landing with James Berry Black in Canada circa 1890...James Berry Black appears to have married a Sarah Rebecca Kenneally, which was good for them as they had a whole heap of kids. All good.

Hi all
Ok, think I may have found someone...but not sure, would appreciate help proving or disproving here!
John Black b. 1 Jan 1874 m. Margaret "Maggie" Geischler/Geeschler b. 2 Nov 1867. in Oxford, Ontario, 9 Jul 1897.
I have found the above two people plus children Isabella Barbara (b.1897) and Clarence B (b.1900), but am not 100% sure it's the right John Black...I mean, quite a common name, eh?
Is anyone else researching Black / Geischler and/or could help me here?
Thanks
Matt

Super stuff...will go and find that right away, thanks!

Of course, still guessing that this is the right John Black!
The year matches (near enough) what we have thus far, though I'm hoping to get to their parish church in Cavan later this year to see what the actual d.o.b. is.
Father's and mother's names are close - ish - with Randal appearing as 'Rendell' and Ann as 'Annie'. Immigration year and settlement place match up with what we already know about his brother, James Berry (thanks greatly to your earlier assistance). Hope I'm not clutching at straws but for the time being this is the best bet I've got.

Just a quick one here
Think I may have discovered a link to certain other Blacks of Cavan. My wife's family has a list of relatives from the 1700s who were involved with Kilmore Cathedral in Cavan; the only missing link is the one connecting these people with the father of Randal John Hamilton Black (b.1841), a certain John Black (b.?).
Any help would be great, though I appreciate it'll be hard as these are Irish records pre-1920.
William Black b.c.1726 m. Elizabeth Carmichael (b.c.1730), married Kilmore Cathedral Aug 9 1751.
Any connection with John Black as above and his son Randal?
Thanks!
Matt

LOCAL NEWS
FIRING AT MR. RANDAL BLACK--Mr. Randal BLACK, son of Mr. John BLACK, of Gartbratten, near this town, is stated to have been fired at on Thursday evening when passing through the village of Butlersbridge. There are many conflicting reports afloat concerning the transaction; but, we understand, Mr. R. Black's version of it is this:--He was returning from the fair of Clones, and was proceeding on horseback through Butlersbridge at about ten minutes past seven o'clock on the evening in question. His father, and a Mr. HALLIDAY, were driving on an outside car a few paces behind. When opposite the Roman Catholic chapel of Butlersbridge, a gun or pistol was fired at him, a portion of the contents of which struck him on the head, inflicting a slight wound, and knocking off his hat, in which a small hole is perforated. The wound on the head is considerably larger than the hole in the hat. He declares that he distinctly saw a man standing at the door of the above chapel, whom he perceived turn round and lift his arm, and then saw the flash of fire-arms. His father also saw the man and the flash of fire-arms and heard the shot when he at once stopped the car, and found his son bleeding. Mr. Halliday corroborates these statements in their essential features. The occurrence took place quite close to the police barrack of Butlersbridge, and one of the men of that station says he heard the shout of murder, but heard no report of fire-arms, and other persons in the vicinity make similar statements. Mr. Randal Black and his father came at once into Cavan, and reported the matter to the Constabulary. Sub-Inspector Napier lost no time in proceeding to the scene of the outrage; but could glean no information to throw any additional light on the affair. A boy named LITTLE, who had been discharged from the service of Mr. John Black, was arrested, he having made use of some threats towards Mr. Randal Black after he had left his father's employment. On yesterday (Friday), T. Thompson, Esq., J.P., held an investigation which resulted in the discharge of the boy Little, it having been shown that he could not have been at Butlersbridge at the time Mr. Black was fired at. Up to the present the affair is enshrouded in the greatest mystery, and is the subject of much controversy and comment.
