Does anyone have any information on Haining Rig House? It has re-appeared from the cut down forest near Middlestead Farm and Howden farm, on the right hand side as you leave the Golf Course leaving from SELKIRK to HAWICK

Is this the building you're referring to?

Don't know where the photographer got the description 'herd's cottage' from.

and co-incidentally, fourth row down, second picture (click for larger image)

could that be the same building or is it just artistic licence?
It would have to be looking towards the mill pond as the body of water isn't Haining loch (no sign of the house and the wrong shape).

If you find someone in selkirk in the 1881 census and then go to neighbours you will find Hainingrig house and the other property in and around the Haining grounds. I did it months ago for the haining display in the Courthouse Market Square Selkirk but didnt keep copies .There was also an open day at the Haining two weeks ago with displays and maps etc and hundreds turned up.
