Help needed to trace the Kearney family who were from Donegal. I believe that William was the Father and I think lived in Donaghmore parish, I can find one instance of him in the Griffiths Valuation renting land in Goland. His wife was Eliza I cannot read her maiden name. They had at least one son James who left Ireland and came to Port Glasgow where he married Annie Moore. I have tried the Pilot Family Search but cannot find anything relating to them including variances of the surname. Can anyone help???

Very difficult to give you more information without any idea of dates. LDS Pilot site has 4 sections for Ireland- civil registration index (births, deaths and Catholic marriages from 1864, non-Catholic marriages from 1845), Irish births (roughly 1861-c1881), Irish marriages and Irish deaths.

I know that James left for Port Glasgow before 1867 because he was married in Port Glasgow where his age is stated as 24. The Kearneys were staunch Catholics, is there any other way I can trace family births and deaths in Ireland I know it is notoriously difficult given the destruction of the records??
When James got married in 1867 his parents were still alive.

If James' parents died after 1864 (as seems to be the case), their deaths should be in the civil index but with a very common surname it's usually not possible to know which might be the correct entry without ordering many certificates (even then with so few details on death certificates it can be difficult to be sure). Have you tried checking to see if the parents also moved to Scotland?

Yes, I tried checking, but it seems that James came over with a cousin called Patrick, all I have to go on is the family names as stated on Marriage and Death Certificates and the census in scotland which shows that they were born in Ireland I think his mothers maiden name might have been Naylor or Mayle very difficult to read the registrars handwriting (must have been a Dr in a previous life !!).

My Great Aunt Bessie Mcdaid b. 1867 married a Patrick Kearney from Leenan on Ceal.. The Kearney nickname was "puute"

Thank you, that might help because further down the family tree the name Bessie starts to appear. Is this Co. Donegal excuse my ignorance and did your Great Aunt Bessie end up in Scotland particularly Port Glasgow??
I am not sure about the nickname "Puute" if you speak french you may understand but that means "whore" lets hope that is not what they intended !!!!

No, all the family are in Clonmany , Donegal. All kearneys in donegal have a nickname as the name is very common.

My great grandfather was born in Ardara on 5.10.1871 his father was James and his Mother Annie Moore, is your family part of this link? I know that James's father was William Kearney and his mother Eliza but I am struggling with her maiden name because of the registrars handwriting. Do you know any of the family attached.
What does Puute mean if it has a meaning.

Hi , I think we are distantly related, Annie Moore and James Kearney are my great great grandparents, been looking for info on them too, have found their marriage cert , but doesn't mention Annie's parents, however her death cert lists them as Bridget Murphy and John Moore, hope this helps......

Doonan, thanks I had that information, I think that Annie had a sister called Bridget who died in 1895 in Port Glasgow, her mother is listed as Mary Ann Moore nee Docherty and father as John Moore, so I am assuming that John remarried Bridget, did you have any of that? who is your Great Grandfather/mother. Mine is John Kearney.

Hi , Thanks for that , maybe makes sense as to why Annie Moore didnt mention her parents on the marriage entry. My great grandfather is John Kearney too, I'm one of the Stevensons! I assume you are one of the Greens?
