Title: 94th Regiment of Foot
Post by: New Zealander on Sunday 05 September 10 08:20 BST (UK)
:)  Information if someone could assist please?

I have a family member who was a Sergeant in the 94th Regiment of Foot in 1813.

He was Sergeant Alexander Fotheringham.

I would like to locate his service record. Can this be accessed and where?

Many thanks

He is also listed as a private in the 1804 Muster Roll of the Scots Brigade in India.

I have just learned that my grgrandfather ANTHONY JOHN SAUNDERS was a Private in the 94th Regiment of Foot in 1871.    Can someone please tell me how I could access his records.   Thank you so much,
Wendy

Good Morning Wendy

Try the National Archives:-

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-4010631&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CFOTHERINGHAM&accessmethod=0

The same place our family member was located.  Also Find my Past might be another option.

Cheers

Thank you for the suggestion, Alex.   I know he was not a Chelsea Pensioner, and assume that his discharge record would be somewhere, but as I can't check his name, I don't know where to look next, or what to order!
I don't have a subscription to findmypast or to ancestry.   Darn!

hi wendy
as you rightly say there,s no service/pension record for him and if he,s not in those he won,t be anywhere as all service records were destroyed by the regt approx 20 years after leaving the service .

Aaaaagh, darn it!    Well, thank you for trying, Trevor, I do appreciate it.   Perhaps you can advise me....he was 19 in 1871, and living at Aldershot.   By 1875, he got married in Cardiff.   Would he have been in Aldershot the whole time with the 94th?    Or is it possible that he went to Cardiff with the army.    I am trying to work out where he would have been for his 7 years.
ANTHONY JOHN SAUNDERS, born 1849.
Thanks,
Wendy

Hi Wendy

The 94th left Aldershot in September 1871 for Newport, Monmouthshire. That at least is where the CO was. Other regiments nominally based in Newport usually had company strength detachments spread over south Wales, so he could have been in Cardiff. Few towns had barracks large enough for a whole battalion, and it was also desireable in this period of virtually no police force to show the flag over a wide area.

They were definately in Ireland by August 1873, so I think he must have been discharged before then.

Well, this is getting curioser and curioser!     If he was discharged by 1873, he would only have been 21, so he couldn't have put in his 7 years!
Would he have gone to Ireland and come back to Cardiff, or been transferred to a local Cardiff force?
Thank you Ken, for your help in narrowing him down!

Here’s how some soldiers left the 94th regiment.

Western Mail (Cardiff), December 18, 1876
William Scott had fraudulently enlisted in the 41st at Cardiff in 1876 having in June 1873 been court martialled and discharged from the 94th.

Western Mail (Cardiff), February 24, 1874
At Newport, Mary Ann Bence resorted to stealing after her husband, a private in the 94th, had deserted the regiment and left her.

Western Mail (Cardiff,) February 11, 1875
At Newport, Edward Langman charged with being a deserter from the 94th regiment.

No doubt there were others.

Hi T-Rex,
Well desertion must be more common than I thought!   These are sad examples of that - but a little amusing too!    I don't suppose it would be easy to track down a deserter in those days, especially if he left town.    I am beginning to wonder if my grgrandad was one of those.
On a different note, how did you find the newspaper articles?
Regards, and thanks,
Wendy

Wendy,

If your education institution, or National, State, County or City library subscribes to a newspaper archives database you may be able to access it online from home for free. For example residents of Wales can get free access to what’s listed here. It all depends on your location. (Click the A-Z + sign) http://www.llgc.org.uk/e-resources

Alternatively there are a number of pay sites offering different collections of old newspapers.

Hi T-Rex
Thank you for the suggestion.   I am actually a member of the library in Wales, but I must be thick as I can't figure out how to get old newspapers!   Is there a link?

See the e-Resources FAQ link on the left of the page for instructions. Click on the + next to A-Z and then on what looks like a small portrait next to the resource.

It probably takes you here, but I’m not sure if that’s for all of them or just the one I clicked on. https://idp.llgc.org.uk/idp/Authn/UserPassword

Wahoo, it worked.   Thanks for the link, Rex.   I found 94th regiment, and it looks like he wasn't reported as a deserter!  Waiting for his marriage certificate to see if he was still in the army, otherwise something is afoot, and not just the Regiment!
