Sorry to ask for more help, but i am stuck with tracing my maternal great grand father Ernest Henry Langridge, born 1890 in Maresfield, Sussex, married to Rose Emily Cornwell (born 1890) in about 1908. He seems to have disappeared after my Grandma Violet Rose was born in 1908. Family stories have it he died in the 1st war but I can find no records. Alternative stories have it he ran away to Australia, but can find no record there either. All we know is that Rose Emily married again in 1948 to George Henry Gaston (born 1890) and the suggestion is that she had to prove/claim Ernest was dead. Any help or advice very gratefullyrecieved. Please note it is only Ernest Henry Langridge I need help with, all the others are known to me in my living memory. Thanks

Hi,
Do you have a copy of the 1948 marriage certificate? Is Rose described as a widow?

Many thanks, but no, Ernest was definately born in Maresfield, Sussex, 1890. I have the family tree before him going back to 1700`s. Its just that he disappears, and my Mum (his Grand daughter would love to know what happened to him as she obviously never met him.

Yes, he appears to have left his wife and gone back to his parents also in Sussex local to Lewes/ Maresfield, but that doesnt really help as we know he vanished about the start of the war

I have been doing a Vicary one-name study for some time now and would be interested to learn of your Vicary connections
-
Sorry, but i am unaware of any Vicary connections?

In the last census Ernest, Rose and baby Violet are all together in Sussex. Ernest is a cowman on a farm, and his birth year is put at 1885.

The address they are at are South Street, Chailey, Sussex.
If you search for Violet Rose Langridge born 1910 this will find them.

But my Gran Violet rose was born in 1909?

This could be him

Birth years in census are approximate, she was probably written down as a one year old but could have been between one and two on census night.
-
Of course, forgive my naeivity (doesnt look like i spelt that right!)
Bit frustrated though as I subscribed to My Ancestry, but they havent got the 1911 census, so I have to keep paying for entries which is making it all a bit expensive!!

I think the chap who went to Oz looks a good bet, seeing as his last address in the UK was Sussex and had the same occupation.
I know you said his wife remarried in 1948, and this chap was still alive up to at least 1954, maybe she had him declared dead so she could remarry, which I believe you can do when someone is gone or missing after seven years.
-
Thats exactly what my Mum think happened! Who is this Os chap to which you refer?
