Title: UK Incoming passenger lists
Post by: genna on Friday 03 September 10 15:39 BST (UK)
Hi

Does anyone know how complete the database for these lists are? I have trawled through details on the Ancestry site but haven't been able to find the arrival of my grandparents Florence Marie and Harry James Martin from India. I know they travelled here sometime in the 1930s or early 1940s. They were living here by 1943.

Hi

One of the reasons could be that they disembarked in the Mediterranean. Ships coming through the Suez Canal would often call at a port such as Marseilles or Naples, some passengers preferred to then travel overland to a Channel port and cross on the ferry. I believe not only was this quicker but it avoided the sometimes rough weather in the Bay of Biscay.

Another thing I have noticed on Ancestry is that sometimes the index shows the port the ship originated from rather than where the passenger boarded (the image has the boarding port) so don't rule out ships that commenced from further east and called into India.

Hi Andy

Thanks for the reply. I had looked at ships that might have taken on passsengers in India but without any luck however I didn't consider they may have travelled overland to a Channel port.

Hi

I've finally found them with the rest of the family on a ship sailing from Brisbane which called at Port Said.

I've been able to access the lists since I first looked last Wednesday. A little disappointed it's not permanent as I still have one person to find!

You are allowed to type the word Ancestry when refering to Ancestry.com, etc.  ::)

I think you have to pay for Ancestry.com

Yes, it is a subscription site (and under their terms & conditions we are not allowed to ask for look-ups) but many libraries in various countries subscribe to Ancestry Library Edition and do not charge members for access.

Hi Genna,

I am Julie from Australia and I am very interested in the Martin Family, I am the descendant of John Alfred Martin who was born in Egypt in 1900, his father Alfred John Martin was born in Smyrna Turkey in 1876 and his father James Martin was born in Woolwich Kent UK in 1832 and James is the son of John Martin and Elizabeth Carroll who married in 1827 at St Mary Parish in Southwark, Newington, Surrey.

My great-great grandfather James Martin was a stoker in the Royal Navy, he married a woman of Maltese origin 'Maria Dolores Aloysia Caruana'.  My Grandfather John and his wife Epiphania emigrated to to England about 1837, and they were evacuated to Carmarthen Wales in the 1940's when the Germans were bombing London, they emigrated to Australia arriving in Outer Harbour, Port Adelaide, South Australia on Christmas day in 1952.

I noticed you have Rimmer/ Rimar?, Brooks and Wooley in your list if names, I am DNA match with Rimar family (Russians from Turkey who moved to France, England and America) I have Brooks and Wooley interested to as I have DNA matches with those names on Ancestry and My Heritage. I think the Brooks connection may be through the Carroll family. I would like to chat and see if there is any information we can share.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Kindest regards,
Julie

Hi Julie
The Martins in my family tree originate from Kent going back to the 1700s.  I’m afraid I don’t recognise the Martins you have mentioned and none are part of my family tree.
The Rimmers in my tree are from Lancashire going back to the mid 1700s.
As for the Brook(e)s and Woolleys, they relate to my husband’s ancestors and originated from Worcestershire in the early 1800s.
I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful.
Regards Genna

Hi Julie
Just to add that I’ve now looked at the family trees on Ancestry that include your John Alfred Martin and I can’t find any connection with my Martin ancestors.
All the best, Genna

Hi Genna,

My tree is private, it has over 13,000 people and I have a lot more Martins in my tree than the trees you may have looked at.

Hi Julie
Without being able to view your tree it would be difficult to find any connection between our Martin families. All I can say it that I have 6 James Martins in my tree who were all born in Kent. James b1747 and James b1771 both born in Brenchley, Kent. James b1817, James b1847, James b1869 and finally James Henry b1879 all born in Maidstone, Kent.
