Hi,
Patrick Duane, my gt-grandfather, was a slaughterman who died in a car accident on the 5th July 1930 on the "Masteron-Carterton road", leaving a wife and six kids. He was 51.
He was an Australian who was in New Zealand for work.
He is apparently buried in Greytown Cemetery
I have his death certificate and found an article that references his death on the Past Papers website. In the newpaper article it states that an inquest was to be held.
Does anyone know if I can find out info about the inquest?
Thanks
Mike

... If it was something high profile it would possibly be covered in a newpaper summary as well, otherwise I assume you would need to apply for a Coroner's report

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the NZ Board. I'll have a look for any record of a Coroner's Report next week for you.
I suspect it'll be held at Archives NZ's Wellington office.

Thanks heaps for the info! This is great and much appreciated.
Would I be correct in thinking that to view the Intestate Letters you speak of Althea that I would have to go into the Archives?

If in Wellington, yes you go into office
or can order from them and pay or
get a chatter to view for you,

Yes, I'll order the probate as well ;)

Hi Mike,
I've ordered both the coroners report and the probate and will go back on Friday to sight them.
From previous experience some of the information in the former can be quite graphic so I may send it to you via PM.
Regards, riley

Hi Mike,
I have photos of both files; the probate is a single page but the Coroner's Report is about 30 pages, both written and typed.
Can you send me your email address via a PM, please.
Regards, riley

.... :-\ that was quite quick with the Coroner's report, Riley? ... I sent for one last Monday 30/8 and it hasn't turned up in the snail mail yet ... patience is a virtue

Er...I don't recall a request from you, Mare, and can't see one on the Board.
Did I miss your look-up request or did you send your request to Archives and it's them that haven't responded as yet?
Modified to add: Whew, I missed the word 'snail'. Stand down, Insert more cheese ++redo from start++

:D ... sorry Riley, that wasn't meant to panic you ... I had previously made an attempt to apply on line but their response was that the procedure is to apply by mail ... except as in your case you apply in person, just noticed 2 days later you were able to view it, so thinking the snail delivery is sluggish ;D ;D
-
Hi Mare, yes, you threw me off balance completely with that one. It's probably sluggish because they spend so much time fielding obscure questions from researchers like me so frequently!
Incidentally, Archives tell me that the demand to digitise army personnel files is extremely high. Obviously a very popular decision to have made this facility available.
